To my knowledge, Winston-Salem is a handicapped friendly city that has numerous amenities and amazing weather. I'm 48 years old, single, use a walker, alone and have limited mobility (caregiver comes twice a week).
I know every city has rough areas (originally from Chicago) . But I can't run/duck/defend myself like I used to and I'm asking that someone, please, tell me what neighborhoods to avoid.
I refuse to let my disabilities stop me.
Thanks so much for your help

Good for you, and good luck!
From my understanding, the East part of the city is a bit rough... that being said, I'm in the process of buying a house there myself regardless (relocating from Va).
I've always heard from people there that the West and North sides of the city have historically been the most desirable. Everything East of 52 (or right near 52) has historically been less desirable.
The East & South sections of the city are pretty rough. West is the best. North is okay. (I've suffered here most of my life, so I should know.)
I don't think you can unilaterally paint those regions as rough. Certainly more crime there because of historical race and class stratification, but there are decent neighborhoods in these areas.
The East & South sections of the city are pretty rough.
that has historically been the perception.
