Sure as hell beats the eyesore that's sitting there right now.

According to an article from yesterday, groundbreaking is set for December and the grand opening is expected in late 2023. Apparently, Gordon Ramsay will have a restaurant there.

I still find it amazing something like this is being built in Danville. Just maybe over time it will help create enough jobs and commuting patterns that could lead to Danville, VA being included in the Triad. The city literally sits on the border and north of the Triad. Greensboro will be the closest large city to this casino. I'd give anything to have something like this in Greensboro but unfortunately state law prohibits casino gambling except for on Indian reservations.

I'm just as shocked as you are, though I'm certainly not opposed to the casino. The idea did get some pushback when the casino was first proposed. The churches were clutching their usual pearls, and several small businesses were putting up signs along the roads, urging people to vote "No" on the casino, since they are afraid the casino will hurt their businesses.

The kicker was when the state senator for our area, Bill Stanley, was lobbying against the casino because he thought it would send a "false" message that Danville is dying. The first thing I thought was "Danville IS dying, you f'n idiot! That's why they want the casino!". I'll bet you can guess what letter he has next to his name...

This could be the development that could help push converting highway 29 to interstate standards quicker so that I-785 between Greensboro and Danville becomes a reality.

A performing arts venue will also be included in the casino hotel resort. Danville will probably have to upgrade its airport. The closest large airport to Danville is PTI.

I remember before North Carolina got a state lottery, Greensboro residents drove to Danville to get lottery tickets. The stores on the state line made a killing. Once NC got a lottery that traffic died. With this Casino, Greensboro residents will once again flock to Danville. Hopefully casino gambling will one day be allowed in North Carolina away from the reservations. Would love to see one in Greensboro. It would attract a lot of tourism to Greensboro.

Nah... I can't see NCDOT moving up the time table to upgrade 29 just cause of a casino across the state line. So many other more urgent projects need to be addressed.
I remember those days before the NC lottery.. had a co-worker who used to make that trek up to Danville 2 or 3 times a week. I doubt he has been up there since they started the lottery here. Never cared for the lottery, hated the sneaky way they pushed it through the legislature, but at least the money is going to schools.

Personally I'd hate to see a casino here. There is a point of oversaturation.... Danville is getting one.... Kings Mountain is building one... I think Norfolk is getting one. Let the people drive to those locations if they want to throw away their money.

Agreed, and I doubt they could even if they wanted to, given that their budget was hit by a grenade thrown by recent hurricanes, Map Act settlements, and COVID-19.

Maybe the next Hells Kitchen or the one after will be for the job as Head Chef at Gordon Ramsey Steak Danville. Haha.

But yeah, this development looks pretty cool. I'm not a big gambler, but I might make the drive up there once or twice a year to bet (relatively lightly) on some football, maybe play some Poker/Blackjack/Craps/Roulette while there and get a nice dinner.

The old Schoolfield mill building at the corner of West Main Street and Bishop Road, where the casino will be built. It was part of Dan River Mills many years ago.

The casino resort is going to attract surrounding development (restaurants, hotels and potentially other tourist attractions) its a big deal for any city to land a casino/resort and Danville needed it.
