While this development is not in North Carolina, it certainly affects Triad residents. Voters in Danville, VA approved casino gambling and Ceasars will open a casino in the city in 2023. The casino will include a 300 room hotel and a 2,500 seat live entertainment venue. Danville is about 45 minutes northeast of Greensboro along Hwy 29 (I-785). Its a little isolated and has a small regional airport but clearly they expect to draw people from the Triad. Greensboro is the closest big city to Danville. This gives Greensboro residents a much closer option than driving to Cherokee, a short 45 minute drive. Its not surprising because the city is dying. The textile mills closed down and left the city without jobs. They have to drive to Greensboro for any kind of real entertainment and shopping options. I see Danville tags in Greensboro all the time. Three other cities in the commonwealth also plan to open casinos. In North Carolina casino gambling is only legal on Indian reservations. If ever made legal statewide expect casinos opening in uptown Charlotte, in Greensboro and Raleigh. But I doubt that will ever happen in my lifetime. North Carolina is still more conservative than Virginia which has been becoming more and more liberal over the past few decades.
Not only will the casino impact the Triad but the Triangle, as well. Danville isn't far from Durham at all, although it's country roads between the two. It's much easier to reach Danville from Greensboro.
I really can't blame them at all. As you said, Danville is a depressed area and could easily benefit from a casino, which will likely bring in folks from the Triad, Triangle, Lynchburg, Roanoke, and even Charlotte or Richmond.
Can anyone tell me why casions are only allowed on Indian reservations in NC. It's still in NC so it seems like it should be allowed anywhere in the state.. just think of the tax money and jobs a casino creates.. I mean come on NC , what does it matter if the casino is in Cherokee or Greensboro or Winston-Salem.. it's a win win no matter where it sits!!!

Too many conservatives. Even democratic leadership is conservative in regards to gambling. Look how long it took for the state to get a lottery even when democrats were in charge. Not to mention many cities would be against it thinking casinos will change the character of their cities and attract crime. I disagree. I support casinos in NC. There are zoning laws cities can put in place to prevent them from turning into Las Vegas by limiting the number of casinos that can open in a city. If casinos were allowed, what does everyone think about one opening in downtown Greensboro or Winston-Salem? I think it would attract a lot of tourists and more hotels downtown.
Thanks Gsoboi78,
but I'm still curious on how Cherokee negotiated with NC to allow casinos on reservations... I mean I wonder what they did to pursay NC to give in and let them have a casino? I'm glad they NC did work with them I just wonder what NC got out of the deal.. I dont know if downtown GSO landscape could fit a casino. But perhaps that would be a nice addition to Gate City Blvd. Especially on the mall site when that mall finally does go away... I couldn't picture Winston ever having a casino.. but who knows.. I could definitely see Durham, Raleigh, Greensboro and Charlotte with a casino.

The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act allows casino gambling on indian lands. Otherwise, the state of NC doesn't allow casino gambling.
As for public support in Danville, the city is in a unique situation. Its pretty much a dying city and residents see it as a way to revive the city. Greensboro on the other hand is not dying and is progressing without the need for casinos. While I'd love to see one open in Greensboro if the state ever allows it, its difficult to predict how the city of Greensboro would receive the idea. I agree the mall site is the best location especially being near the Koury Convention Center and there is already an on-site 1,000 room hotel. Fill up some of that dead space parking lot.
I have no doubt the Charlotte area would build one and probably uptown. If the Heritage USA site in Fort Mill outside of Charlotte wasn't owned by a Christian organization, it would likely be a good location. Some how I doubt they would allow a casino being built on the property lol.
Casinos in SC are also illegal however there are cruises that go out into international waters to gamble. Myrtle Beach could very easily become the Las Vegas of the east coast but city leaders there clearly let it be known they are not for that. The city already has that casino destination like vibe and is already a major tourist destination.

Atlantic City, NJ says hi!
I think we are rapidly reaching the saturation point for casino gambling in this country, especially in this area. Between the Cherokee's 2 operations, the recently approved Catawba tribe casino near Kings Mountain, the gambling boat in Myrtle Beach, and now the Danville casino, I don't see the market demand for much more gambling in VA, NC and SC.

If the Catawba casino is built near Kings Mountain, it will serve the greater Charlotte region as well as Greenville-Spartanburg and Upstate SC. But there have been lawsuits, as the conservative Republican legislature in NC has been opposed, and the competing Cherokee tribe has filed a noncompete type lawsuit.

Heritage USA is still used as a ministry site, so I doubt gambling would be allowed. But it would be nice if it could be restored to the glory days of Jim and Tammy and the PTL, as it was a top tourist destination and a major boost to the regional economy. Jim Bakker has since relocated to Missouri, so some other successful ministry would have to take it over. But back in the day, the television production was top notch, the music was excellent, and the hotel and waterpark were very nice. Just needs new visionary leadership, stewardship, and legitimate operation.
