Has anyone sold gold or jewelry at Belk when they do do their 3-day special event? Good experience? Bad experience?

Are there any honest, reliable places anyone would recommend in the Upstate for selling jewelry?

I don't have personal experience selling jewelry, but a general rule of thumb is that the more a gold-buying business advertises, the less they will pay you. I would suggest going to a long-established coin shop (such as Plaza Coins and Knives) rather than a fly-by-night drive-through gold buyer. I would expect a company like Belk, with a reputation to uphold, would be pretty honest about it as well.

Before you go, weigh your gold, know its purity, and know gold "spot price" is about $1800 per troy ounce. Any business will pay you something less than spot price because that's how they make a living. Know the difference between a troy ounce and a regular (avoirdupois) ounce.

Good question. I have some jewelry to sell also and would love to know where to take it.

Thanks gvsteve!

Belk is doing their annual (?) 3-day event this week, beginning today. I thought I might try a local place or two before going to Belk, for comparison purposes. I, too, figured if it's sponsored by a company like Belk, it's got to have some degree of integrity.

A local high-end jeweler also recommended Coin Depot to me. Interestingly... I just did a BBB check and Coin Depot has an F rating, but Plaza Coins & Knives is BBB accredited.

There's a jewler in Longwood off 17/92 by Dan's Restaurant. He pays top dollar for gold. He's been there over 30 years. I went to several places and he was way above what everyone else offered. I took very small handful of broken jewelry to him and ended up with $425.00.

FYI - I no longer trust the BBB letter rating ... Criticize The Better Business Bureau... And They'll Pull Your Accreditation | Techdirt

There are also a number of reports of being able to buy an A rating. But in this case, the number of complaints is a good indicator; 0 VS 3 complaints.

I also do not trust BBB ratings as I got scammed by a "premium text messaging" company that I never requested service from - this company had the highest rating on the BBB website even though a good 40% of their hundreds of complaints were listed as not resolved.

But I do trust Jed at Plaza Coins as I've been buying coins from him for years.

I haven't sold my jewelry yet, but I got quotes from the folks at Belk and Coin Depot. Coin Depot quoted 10% higher. Both were quite respectful and professional, and it wasn't nearly as "icky" as I thought it might be.

Plaza Coins & Knives was too busy when I dropped by and I didn't have time to wait. Will try later.

P.S. If you haven't sold jewelry before, keep in mind they will only take 10-14-18+ karat gold - no gold-filled. They also buy sterling, but no silverplate.

Cool, let us know where you end up selling it. I need to take mine somewhere. I keep forgetting to do it.
