I always thought that if you paid them without going to court, then you were stuck with them until the points go away over time. If you get a ticket, and want it to go away, you should go to court on the assigned date and discuss with the judge. I have taken defensive driving twice over the years, which eliminated the corresponding tickets from my record. I don't think there's any going back later if you didn't take care of it in court.
