Id like to know too...I believe the house and senate has to agree in order to get it done...and when has that happened?
Yes, the Senate, House, and President all have to agree on the exact same bill for it to become law.
Historically, you only needed a majority in the Senate to pass a law, but with the current abuse of the filibuster, Democrats need a "supermajority" of 60 votes (out of 100, also known as a "supermajority") in the Senate to get anything passed.
They don't, and haven't ever had those 60 votes. There was a brief window where they had 58 Democrats and two Independents (who tended to vote Democratic). And that's when "ObamaCare" was passed.
Currently, any single Senator can easily keep bills from becoming law. Hopefully that rule will change soon.
The Senate was designed to act slowly so that laws weren't changed all the time with the blowing winds of politics. It was intended to give the government, and the people, some stability in knowing what the laws are.
What I don't like about US elections is that not every vote counts. It should be one person = one vote.
The electoral vote is stupid.
Well, it's what the Founding Fathers intended. They didn't actually believe in Democracy as we know it today. They wanted a more elite class to be elected, and for those elites to rule as they chose, sometimes even against the popular opinion of the day. If we didn't like how they ruled, we replace them. And by "we," I mean white, male landowners. So it was sort of the elite selecting the super elite.
The electoral college was put in as a buffer, in case the people (white, male landowners) made a "mistake" and chose the wrong person.
Technically, the members of the electoral college can select whoever they want to be President, despite how the people vote. But the two parties have virtually guaranteed that won't happen through the way they choose the members of the electoral college.
So if you really and truly "believe in the Constitution," and want us to always refer to "what our Founding Fathers intended," only white male landowners should be electing a "college" that selects out President for us.
That's hardly what most people now think of as "Democracy."
When I have a choice between voting for a person or voting for a Teleprompter, I 'll choose the person. Romney gets my vote.
Ah yes, I'm sure a Republican candidate or president will never use a teleprompter...but there are lots of people who will quickly put a stop to it if it ever does happen!
