the Black Widows are my horror- I hate them and to be honest, I think they are everywhere around here. We get pest control, but our guy said that they are pretty much under every house he sprays. They like dark and quiet and not to be disturbed, so that is the good news. You just have to be careful where you put your hands. I've had them get inside storage crates in my garage before, so now I shake them and move the box into the sunlight and open the top before I go digging through. I also have to look in the sandbox before my kids play because one was inside a cup in the sandbox once.
At least they are VERY distincitve looking- I know there are probably some good spiders (yes, they are gross, but for the most part, good) that might look like a black widow, but if I see that body style, I just want to smash it. There's no looking for the hourglass on the bottom of it.
I've never seen flying Palmetto bugs in Greenville. I lived there from 4-8, then moved to Florida where I saw my first flyer We're moving back in June '09 and I will be glad to get away from the ones that fly.

I saw my first flying palmetto bug when I worked the overnight shift at Universal Studios Florida.
well today i caught my first praying mantis, wow, this creature is amazing, yes we do have insects, i scream and run, and then come back to study it. i have lived here almost a year, and am now well adjusted, ha ha.
i have never seen a snake, no **** roaches, or palmetto bugs, but alas lots of spiders, but only outside. thank you god. the spider i have are black widows, but they do not chase me or hunt me down, i only come upon them when flipping the dog house, drains and yard stuff, why i do this is another thread. the spiders always freak me out. but i never touch only look. i have the praying mantis just for the day for the kids and me to look at and then i will let him go. i read he eats bugs, does anyone have a leash and collar small enough for my mantis, he would probably eat all the spiders. life is too good here, to let the bugs keep you away.
Oh yeah, there are most definitely fire ants here. I've had a few nests of them in my yard and one right up near my foundation, which did NOT make me happy. I too am freaked out by bugs. I knew there were a lot of "critters" when I moved down here, and I have developed a huge fear of spiders, thinking every one is going to be a black widow out to get me.
I agree with boernomore about it being too good to live here to let the bugs keep you away.
ugh ... fire ants!!! I think my home was built on top of a whole town of fire ants! hahaha I live in the country ... spiders are definitely an issue, but, nothing too severe. I havent had any snakes in my yard (that I have ever seen) been there about 2.5 years. Lots of fun creepy crawlies, but, usually outside. Stick with routine pest control, you will live happily ever after
Growing up on a small, relatively isolated lake in Blue Ridge, we had tons of water moccasins, and there were always copperheads in the woods around the lake. One of the scariest experiences of my childhood was jumping into the creek and finding out that I had just jumped into a nest of snakes.
