My family is moving to Greenville this year. I am a liberal Democrat and atheist who is used to living in deeply conservative states and communities. When I first looked into Greenville, I was concerned about the hard-right politics of the area and Greenville in particular (Bob Jones University). There's also a state representative from Greenville who keeps trying to water down the state science curriculum by undermining the teaching of evolution, which is not cool at all. But, all that being said, I'm up for giving it a shot. I love the scenery and the promise of four defined seasons. I am thrilled at the prospect of a walkable downtown. There's an international center that offers language courses, and I recently read that the local children's museum has just become affiliated with the Smithsonian. Conservatives in Greenville can't be any more conservative than the friends that I have here or elsewhere that I've lived. And if I really need a break, there's always Asheville NC, a short hour/hour-and-a-half drive away through some very pretty country. We can't cede good communities to those whom we disagree with politically. Indeed, the more that progressives migrate to conservative communities, the more progressive those communities might become.

Progressivism is rooted in a HUGE government industrial complex controlling every aspect of our lives from cradle to grave, it is rooted in fascism and tyranny the opposite of constitutional freedom and liberty. Progressivism is outdated and passe' ala leg warmers and tape cassettes. Power to the People!
I have lived here for close to 3 years. I have not noticed a real divide racially, however, I am white and do not talk to too many people here about race relations, only going based on what I have seen. I will say there are a lot of conservative religious people. I do not have much against that, just not my thing so to me it is noticeable. My son goes to a day camp sometimes that is at a church, and it is not overtly religious with their activities nor do they take issue with us not being religious.
I'm a trans liberal republican buddhist turned christian with semi-democratic views on fiscal conservatism. I'm also caucasian with two asian adoptive children that I am raising with my genetically cloned partner. I like trucks and church but I also shun traditional religion and believe hunting is wrong. Is Greenville progressive enough for me?

Thoughtful post. Like you and your family, my wife and I are considering a move to Greenville. We're moderately liberal, and we're not atheists (although we have no interest in religion), but we have the same concerns as you.
We came to the same conclusion as you as well: if we can add some balance to the community, so be it. Best of luck with your move.

Certainly, you're entitled to your own opinions but, as DP Moynihan said, you're not entitled to your own facts. You're objectively wrong in just about every aspect of your post.

It kind of proves my point about the high level of ignorance/hypocrisy in this area.
I assume if you want the government to stay out of our lives, you are cool with gay marriage. I mean who is the government to tell gay people they can't marry each other?
As for race, SC...Greenville included..is probably far better than many big cities of the North and West Coast. Those are the most racist places I've ever encountered. Seems people of all races get along so well down here, with the exception of the isolated individual moron you may encounter from time to time.
I spend a lot of time in Greenville and Charleston. Go out on the towns at night, and you see people of all races and nationalities, and its not even a topic or issue. Just people having fun and living.
One person was correct though saying you may get a little conversation started just being a "liberal" as much of SC, especially the upper state, tends to be right wing.
