It has been horrendous the last couple weeks, worse since they've cut I-85 northbound to just the one lane through Spartanburg. My 55-ish minute commute from Spartanburg to DT Greenville took me an hour and a half this morning, for no good reason. And I was nearly rear-ended by a semi near Pelham Rd., where the driver clearly wasn't paying attention and had to swerve into the right shoulder at the last second.
Last night driving home was a nightmare. Took me almost two hours to get home. Another accident, blocking two of the three lanes, this one at exit 66, I'm sure at least partially caused by this latest change they've made cutting it to one lane. It seems like there have been accidents every day since they made the change, between exits 63 and 69. This is untenable for the number of months that they're talking about (having this end in spring). Another big mistake by SCDOT. There had to be less intrusive ways to do that, cutting a major interstate from 3 lanes to 1 through a highly populated area, especially when there is as much truck traffic as there is on I-85 through the Upstate. And 29 is hit or miss as an alternate, as in this morning when Wade Hampton was completely blocked heading toward Greenville due to an accident at Suber Rd.

This decision was probably made by the "success story" of the 385 reconstruction in Laurens County several years ago where they reduced everything to 1 lane in each direction. It saved a good deal of money and time on the project. It was slightly inconvenient, but was nothing like the sea of red seen up and down the I85 traffic maps every day. I was pretty surprised when I heard about the long term plan for 1 lane on I85.
Damn they cut it down to just 1 lane. When I read the original announcement I figured they were just closing the far right lane. Not sure SCDOT was thinking there but it sounds like a disaster.
It does seem like there are a lot more cars coming down Woodruff and turning down 296 in the Five Forks now during rush hour. I'm guessing waze and other GPSs are trying to route people around backups on 85.
New traffic pattern at 85/85biz N split mm69: Left lane now takes you 85N, center & right lane 85biz, the far right lane created by exit68 onramp is closed (onramp open but must merge now). Repainted white traffic lane markers so guess it'll be around awhile.

I take I-85 N every morning thru this mess - THIS IS FINALLY MUCH MUCH BETTER - this should have been done from the beginning - total incompetence by whoever is managing this project (but not surprising) - also, the electronic signs prior to this cluster are extremely confusing (from anyone driving out-of-town/state)
I85S from Pelham Road thru to I85/385 interchange is literally crumbling away - I've lived/visited multiple states and cannot recall a poorer interstate surface - the amount/depth of potholes is incredible - I think my CRV is out of alignment due to all the effing potholes - the surface at least needs to be scraped - does anyone on CD have a state DOT/construction contact?

Don't know if I'd call it better. On the way home last night it was a huge mess. Took me 15 minutes to get from Exit 66 to Business 85. Perhaps once people are used to it things will be better.
