I think you'll like Lidl a lot. I'm glad that it will be so close to Aldi on Woodruff Rd. I haven't been back to Germany in a while so I can't rally remember but my mom just visited from Germany and mentioned that she actually likes Lidl better than Aldi. That's where my parents do their weekly shopping.
The Aldi on Woodruff is finally getting a much needed renovation. It wouldn't surprise me if Lidl coming to town especially so close to the store was the cause of it.

The one in Taylors is in the same situation with Lidl coming close and currently being renovated, but that location is also being expanded. Interestingly, it sounds like the Taylors location will close for 5 weeks (end of Sep-through end of Oct) to complete renovations. I would think with just a renovation and not an expansion, the Woodruff location will be able to remain open for business.

I am not looking forward to Aldi being closed that long. Sigh...

The Woodruff Rd store looks like it is getting some sort of expansion too. Part of the exterior facade on the rear of the building been removed and a tiny part of the parking as been ripped up too. I thought it was just a stock room expansion, but perhaps there is more to it than that.

Lidl has improved tremendously in the last couple of years. They have invested in a small expansion of their stores to fit in an instore bakery. I think that was a lucky find for Lidl. In addition to that they have a wider produce selection and the produce section looks much more appealing (compared to Aldi). Lidl offers also a wider range of interesting food specialties from other countries. And at least in Germany, Lidl is even cheaper than Aldi. Both chains have the same regular prices, but Lidl has every week quite a lot of bargain offers, Aldi don't. But I don't think that Lidl in the U.S. will be cheaper than Aldi. Pretty sure that Lidl in the U.S. will try to address more middle-class shoppers, than Aldi was able so far.
The Lidl stores in the U.S. will be quite large for a limited assortment retailer. And they will look quite nice. I wished we in Germany would have such nice Lidl stores. I'm quite jealous.
Most likely that there is already a finished Lidl store in the U.S. This shot at Google street view is from January 2016. It's in Fredericksburg (VA). Hidden behind a "temporary security structure". The store is probably used for planning the interiors and the store procedures.
Aldi's in Spartanburg is also getting a inside/outside remodel.
