Anyone have a suggestion for tent camping within an hour or so of Greenville? We were looking at Devils Fork State Park, however they have restrictions on tent sizes and ours is too big. Thanks!
All of the state parks seem to have "tent pads" that limit how big your tent can be. Ours is 18' long and I haven't been able to find a spot that can handle it.
That's true. Most tent pads are 10x10. Some sites are level enough that the free area outside the tent pad could fit yours, but you might want to call and ask the ranger (or drive through and scope out spots). Also, if i remember correctly, not all spots in those parks have pads.
Jones Gap has some very nice spots by the river that don't have pads and are relatively flat, but you can't park next to them--have to lug your stuff about 100 yards up a trail. It's a pain, but the spots are worth the effort.
There are a number of natural spots in Pisgah near Brevard. There is one spot in particular that comes to mind near the fish hatchery that has a small waterfall/sliding rock, a swimming hole, and some flat spots for tents. Really pretty spot.
I encourage you to take a reconnaissance trip to the Twin Lakes camp ground on Lake Hartwell. Not far from Clemson, it is run by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The ranger at the gate will allow you to drive around and check the place out. I haven't been there in several years, but I recall there were a number of sites that can accommodate a tent of your size. Some of those sites may have been built for RVs or motor homes, but who cares! I remember one visit when we had four good-sized tents and a large canopy scattered across a site.

Sounds like Davidson River Campground. It is pretty.
