Trees blooming - allergies up, just waiting on the daily pollen car wash to start soon. Some days 60’s / maybe 70’s this week. Meteorological spring began March1, astronomical spring March19. Typical rule of thumb is last frost tax day. But maybe we’ll get away with early planting this year.

The pattern in recent years seems to feature April freezes, so I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry. Our blueberries have had freeze damage the last three years in a row due to early blooming and late freezes.

Was it last year or the year before when it got done to 22 1 or 2 nights at the end of April?

Last year was bizarre. February featured multiple 80°F days (far above normal), then March never reached 80°F. The peach crops in our region (Carolinas and Georgia) were more than 90% destroyed by a late freeze after that unusually warm winter. Frost in early April is not unexpected. Anything after mid-April would be very unusual.

I pulled a half-inch thick solid sheet of ice out of a birdbath after 10:15 this morning.

Since the growing season is considered to have begun, Frost/Freeze Watch & Warning program has restarted for the Spring.

Freeze Watch for Monday night with temps 30/31 deg across the region per NWS. You can help protect any sensitive plants by covering with cloth sheet Monday night (and remove mid-morning/ish Tuesday), mulching (pine straw, leaves, etc), watering soil the day before, covering with plastic container (storage bin, cut milk/cola bottle, etc).

Chris Justus said that we should use Easter Sunday as the safe planting date. That's just wrong. Easter can happen as early as March 22, and as late as April 25. Dale used to say tax time (April 15th or so), which makes a lot more sense. Still, in 2022, we had a hard freeze in late April.

What are y'all using to cover some of our plants that could be hurt by the freeze the next night or two? We are short on extra bed sheets.
