I forgot to check on both these things when I was in town.
I'm coming from a city where it was easy for me to go drop off bottles, paper, cardboard and plastic without driving half an hour. Are there convenient recycling stations in Greenville?
Also, I have to admit that I was spoiled by the library where I lived. The computer lab had 20+ computers, the whole building was a wifi hotspot, and there was a really good selection of not only audio books on CD, but also DVD's. I really could have done just fine without Netflix!
Neither of these things are a deal breaker for me, but I am wondering if you guys could tell me what the situation is regarding both these items.
Well, I can't vouch for the whole Greenville metro area, but where I live (in Greer closest to Taylors and Greenville's East side) there's a recycling center about three minutes from my house right behind McDonald's. They have several huge containers where you can drop paper and cardboard on one end and glass and plastic on the other. Right next to it is a drop off for Goodwill too, so I'm able to get rid of lots of stuff in one stop!
Here in Greenville County there is a library system with branches in several locations in addition to the main library in downtown Greenville. I have not yet been inside the main library but regularly visit the Pelham Road location. I would say there are probably 20 computers in there, and there is wifi, though I'm not sure it's throughout the whole building. There is a good selection of audio books, DVDs and CDs. You can go on the library's website and do a search and have things held for you or delivered to your branch for pickup. They also have a wonderful feature (my favorite thing) where they E-mail you three days in advance to remind you when your materials are due. The library in the town I moved from did not have that, and it is a blessing for sure.
There are good number of recycling centers around, although not all of them take all items. If you live in the city limits, the city will pick up both your trash and recycling. Or, if you live in an area where you must pay a private service to pick up your trash, most offer recycling too. I pay just a little extra (around $15 every 3 months) for my recycling service. It's definitely worth it to me not to have to haul all that stuff to the recycling center. And I don't have to sort anything. Just put it all in the bin.
I'm pretty happy with our library system. I mostly use it for books and DVDs but I know my branch does have lots of computers and community programs. They have an excellent selection of books on disk. And, as PhotogGal said, you can get an online account to search the catalog and then have materials delivered right to your closest branch. You can also renew stuff online. It's great!
We use O'Neal and are very happy with them. We switched to them after Waste Management stopped picking up glass. They pick up our trash on Monday and the recycling every Friday (as opposed to biweekly recycling from Waste Management). They are a good company and locally owned.
I find recycling centers pretty easy to come by. On the south side of greenville there are quite a few with signs located around directing you to one near by. I think you can also drop off pop cans at your local fire department since they usually have a trailer sitting out there filled with cans.
There's another thread in this forum on recycling. That was where I learned about the recycling station in the parking lot in front of Earth Fare on Pelham Road. I was driving right past it to go to one a few miles further away. For those who live downtown or near Cleveland Park, there is a recycling center at the corner of Church St. and University Ridge.
