I have always really liked Clairols' Natural Instincts in a demi-permanent. Now, however, my hair is grey-er and I'm going a bit darker. So a permanent seems to give me more uniform coverage. John Frieda smells a lot better than Clairol, but seems a bit dark. Jury still out on that one. Just asking.....have you found any that you just love?
I had to switch hair color for the same reason, I use Clairol Perfect 10 now, you only have to leave it on 10 minutes and it works great. Also use the best shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair you can afford, not the cheap stuff, it doesn't work as good.

I noticed the same thing - the color just didn't seem to take evenly. Or fade evenly either for that matter.
I like Perfect 10 as well, but alternate it with Preference because its a bit more damaging than Preference and Excellence(?). I had not used it in about 4 months, and my hair looked faded and blah. Used Perfect 10 and once again had salon looking color. The colors are VERY nice and it covers for DAYS!

Ok, I will probably try the Perfect 10 stuff next time.
My beautician advised me to stop using Clairol Natural Instincts because it dries the hair. She said go to Sally Beauty supply and get the professional Clairol haircolor. I use the Grey Busters or whatever it's called now, along with 20% ammonia Clairol developer. It doesn't cost much more and I've been happy with it but need to tweek the color next time. Good coverage for resistent grays.
I like the Bigen permanent powder hair color (the brand uses dark colors only). It's not drying, but I keep my hair moisturized, and I also have started back using the Aphogee protein treatment to keep my hair strong.
I used to like the Herbashine, but when it faded, it turned reddish. Not trying to do the tricolor thing.

Many disappointment on my hair coloring upon moving this city, I started going to a beauty school for hair color that used Goldwell Topchic. I asked for the best girl to be referred to as each student graduated. I got my formula developed there. Got perfect formula after some tweaking. The school got bought by someone and the product line was changed. So, I now buy it online and apply it myself. I did get a little help by the last student who graduated under the new company. She took me to the store. Later, I googled and found out that I could buy online with no beautician license
Sometimes I take my color to my hairdresser and let him do it. And I use goldwell ultra rich shampoo and conditioner.
