Are there any interesting places to live in the stretch between Williamsburg and Richmond? I see a few neighborhoods called Norge and Lightfoot--what are those like? Other than that, is it all rural or are there other neighborhoods?

Depends on what you like. The further you get from Williamsburg the more rural it gets. Norge and Lightfoot. Toano all have both neighborhoods and rural land. The western part of James City County is where you will see more horse property and farms Although Stonehouse a 5700 acre planned development is in Toano. Its home to about 850 familes so far and will have 4500 homes once finished along with a planned town center, (smaller version of New Town) build out could take 20+ years..Planned marina on the York River is in the master plan.
Further out towards New Kent there are numerous older neighborhoods along the Chickahominy River. A few offer neighborhood boat ramps/ water access.

Further still is New Kent County, again very rural. if you want a Target or Wall Mart or hospital you have to go to Williamsburg or Richmond so its not for everyone. Values tend to be more affordable than the closer in areas of Williamsburg. Brickshire and Viniterra are two of the more popular planned developments in New Kent. Brickshire offers larger wooded lots, golf course, pool, walking trails, fitness center, tennis, etc with prices starting in the high 200's for nicer homes. That same home in Williamsburg would be 350+.

Viniterra/ Farms of New Kent is another community in New Kent although it came out of the ground right as the economy tanked. The New Kent Winery is the hub of Viniterra. Amenities include an 18-hole championship course designed by Rees Jones, walking trails along with a host of other planned amenities. Home prices start in the $500's. Sales are just starting to pick up within the last 12 months.
Adjacent to Viniterra is the Farms of New Kent . K Hovanian is building a Four Seasons Community there for 55+ active adults with prices from $190's. Another builder just started offering a patio home series starting in the low $200's.

I will try to post some photos later this week. Swamped @ work this week..

Oooh, either of these might be interesting. I'll have to look into both these areas. Looking forward to photos someday... but there's no rush. I know this is a busy season for realtors and besides I won't be able to come down to see things for another month or so, anyway. Plenty of time to look things up and toy with ideas.
