It has been quite a while since I've been on and have looked at some of the older forums regarding Newport News. My husband is being transferred to Yorktown and we are looking at hopefully buying a home there. We probably won't get approved for very much but will be trying for something about $140K. This is due to us still owning our property in CA and renting it out and not wanting to strap ourselves as that place is still hugely underwater. I will actually be working remotely for my current company so no issues regarding job searches for me. We have been looking at the area to the west of 64 and north of Mercury. We use to live in Virginia Beach so know a little about Newport News but it has also been since 2004 so things can definitely change. Are there any subdivisions in Newport News that are better than others or that anyone would suggest. Since I will be working from home I want to feel safe and we currently live in what I would definitely consider a trashy/not so great town in CA so definitely looking for something better. We are also considering Williamsburg and into Gloucester but not sure how far our money will get us there. We are looking at 3 bed 2 bath SFH as currently in condo and not doing that again. We are not to picky on actual home but will have to qualify for VA loan. Sorry to be long winded but any input would be greatly appreciated.

Andrea

There's a few nice areas here in Newport News that won't cost you an arm and a leg. Me and my mother are looking at a house in the Ivy Farms neighborhood and the cost is under $130k. This is a three bedroom, one bathroom house with a garage that has been converted into an extra room (man cave). If you haven't found a real estate agent yet, I'd suggest going with Mitchell Johnson. He's the one my mother is working with. Retired Navy officer who commonly works with retired and active military personnel as well as people who are trying to get a VA loan. I also think the people he recommends for things such as inspections or financial things (such as loan applications) are also retired military.

In general, I think it's best to stay in the midtown area of Newport News. North of Mercury is always a good idea, but, if you want to be ultra-safe, stay north of 17 (J. Clyde Morris Blvd/Avenue of the Arts). My family lives in the area around CNU, and we're very happy here. Some good neighborhood names to look for are Hidenwood, Riverside, Normandy Forest, Glendale, and Menchville. Kiln Creek is also a good area, but it will probably be out of your price range. One nice neighborhood that is south of 17 is Hilton Village. People seem to like it there a lot. If you're looking for a real estate agent recommendation, I can pass along the contact information of ours. She was amazingly helpful when we were new to the area and had no idea what we were doing. She's really nice, and the best thing about her is that she will steer you clear of anything she thinks is a risky purchase. I never got the feeling she was just in for a buck--I always felt like she really wanted to help us find a place we would be happy. PM me if you'd like her name and web address.
