I'm thinking of moving to Olde Towne. I hope that Portsmouth --like Norfolk -- passed a city ban on smoking in restaurants, which is suppose to go into effect, I believe, in March. Did Portsmouth adopt that same ban?

Well if they did pass it it wasn't evident at the Bier Garten last night. The bar had smoking, but the restaurant was smoke free. Seems that places in Norfolk follow suit with smoking sections at places like Kelly's Tavern in Ghent.

Well, I hope that the ban goes into effect on March 1st in P'town (in Olde Towne) just like it will in Norfolk and Beach. We'll find out soon enough, I guess.

I cannot find any news articles on a smoking ban in Virginia Beach or Norfolk. I see articles on it possibly coming up for a vote. What a great thing if it is true. Ireland was the first country to ban smoking in pubs and restaurants and they are not suffering any problems at all. I just went to a pub up in Chicago, the state is smoke free, and people are spilling out the door as always. The singers like not having to breathe in the smoke while they are singing, the bar staff is happy with it, the waitresses and waiters are all hapy with it. And most of the smokers I talked to in the bar are good with going outside, they do it all the time.

I'm sure that Norfolk and Va Beach are going smoke-free sometime in March. There was a good bit of press about it last year. I hope Portsmouth follows suit. New York and Calif and most of Europe have banned smoking in eateries and clubs, and it's so nice going to those places. Our governor is trying to pass a statewide smoking ban. I'm not sure how much resistance he's facing, but I imagine this old tobacco state is up in arms over it.
