My husband & I will be moving our family (2 boys 15 &13) from Las Vegas to VA in July. My husband will be working in Virginia Beach. My question is... how bad is the drive from Chesapeake to VAB? Through reading all the great posts on this site as well as other research, I've narrowed it down to Hickory/Great Bridge area. He's with the post office & we aren't sure yet which station he'll be at, so I know that might make a difference. I just know that after living in Las Vegas for 22 years, the last thing he's going to want is a frustrating commute!! Thanks for any insight!

It depends. I used to work in South Norfolk (Chesapeake), and I live on the edge of Norfolk/Va Beach. The trip took me 15-20 mins going up Va Beach Blvd, and down Military Highway.

I live by the Little Creek Amphibious Base in Va Beach, and whenever I go to Cheapeake I just use I-64. Like you said, depending on where in the city you're going, the drive time will vary, but the interstate has usually been less frustrating than other routes for me, and it doesn't take too long. I don't know how bad the traffic is in Las Vegas, but if you're not used to lots of it you'll get used to it out here.

If you will be in Hickory your looking at about 45-60 min in traffic to the Beach. No Traffic will be about 30 min.

I work in Chesapeake off of Battlefield and live near Mt. Trashmore. It takes me 20 mins. in the morning and 15 in the afternoon. I normally take the back way if the interstate is backed up. No biggie, as I mentioned before in another thread, I can stop at the grocery on the way home or for coffee in the morning.

I would try and find something in the Hickory school district if I was you. Hickory is a much better high school then Great Bridge IMO. Depending on where in Va Bch your husband will be working will be the key on how long the drive is. His best bet would to try and get stationed with the post office which is down by the city hall/court complex section of Va Bch. That would only require a drive straight down Mount Pleasant Road (or what we locals call the back way) to work and he could by pass any interstate driving. Depending on what section of the Hickory school district you move to (this school district covers a large area) his drive would only be anywhere between 15-40 minutes to this post office depending on traffic and bridge lifts

Jewlz after living in Las Vegas you will be continually lost here for a few weeks because the large well lit straight roads are only in VEgas. But once you get used to the intersection of Princess Anne and Princess Anne or the parallel roads of NGreat Neck and WGreat Neck. and realize there is no sense to the layout of the town, you will be fine. Make sure your kids are studying hard, because they will have a difficult first year as Las Vegas is a bit lighter in its requirements for each grade, but don't let them think it is their doing, they will just have to catch up a bit here (Where were they going in LV, my kids went to GV, LV Academy, and White MS when we were there. They are still there as they got the scholarships at the university). Hope to see you soon! I miss Red Rock the canyon and Tuscany the casino!

I figured we've been a bit spoiled by the wonderful roads here - no pot holes - wide lanes. I suppose like everything else...we'll get used to it.
My older son goes to Northwest Career & Technical Academy for media communications. It's only in its second year so it was a little rough at first, but I really like the school. He would have gone to Shadow Ridge if he went to his zoned school. Surprisingly he's looking forward to moving. He's definitely going to need to put in a bit more effort, which is not a bad thing. My younger son goes to Saville MS. He's not too happy about the move, but I'm sure he'll adjust fine. As long as there's baseball, he'll be good!

I used to live in Ocean Lakes in VA Beach and had to drive to battlefield blvd in chesapeake to work and NEVER did it take less than 30 mins and 30 mins was a good day

I live in Chesapeake, and work in Chesapeake. I only go a little over 7 miles, and it takes about 15 mintues. It's not really traffic, but having to stop every 200 feet for a traffic light. I could take the interstate, but the traffic gets backed up. It's Hampton Roads, the traffic is bad wherever you go.
