I drove by Kahala Mall yesterday and saw a bunch of Kahala Crips representing. I also heard them shouting "Eastside". I have been told by some who live next to the mall that the Kahala Crips are known to do drive-by shootings. The strange thing is they use cameras and not guns. Man, they're menacing and hardcore. Several months ago, it was rumored the Kahala Crips were going to beef another hardcore gang, the Waikiki Vice Lords.
Well, my plan to start a gang here in Ko'Olina has been usurped by a group called the 967 Pirates. Instead of mo-peds, like I had dreamed of...they went big and got an actual pirate ship. Guess the Black Pearl and her homies trumped my Mauve Aunties.
Word.
What areas in Hawaii have the most street gangs?
As a mother of a 9 year old, who may move within the next few years, Id like to know..out of curiosity.
thanks.
All joking aside, street gangs are a very small issue in Hawaii. There are some minor issues in the public housing near downtown Honolulu (mostly either ethnic gangs or people representing their particular housing project) but it is not a major concern.
However, petty theft and property crime are definitely issues. I wouldn't go into 7-11 to buy a slurpee without double locking my moped to a pole because stuff has a tendency to walk away and end up on craigslist. I had two bicycles, a moped, and set of tools stolen. Our carport was broken into twice with minor stuff taken. And my wife had her Integra stolen from in front of her mom's house. I can't speak for the outer islands or away from the city, but I lived all over Honolulu proper (Liliha, Moilili, Aina Haina, Manoa, Waikiki, Salt Lake) and that was my experience.
Crime statistics are available online from the FBI and numerous other sources. In terms of violent crime, even Honolulu (which is as urban as you will find in Hawaii) consistently ranks as one of the safest cities in the country.

Minor? You mean like the Kalihi Valley Homes vs. Kuhio Park Terrace (gangs and drugs)? Stuff has happened there and it doesn't look like a very safe place to live.
And what's going on here with Hawaiians being down on the "Micros?" []MicSem Discussion Forum - Man Stabbed to Death in Kalihi (http://www.micsem.org/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=3629 - broken link)

Same as mainlanders vs illegals from South of the mainland border, even if the Micronesians are legal (some are, some aren't)
