there are no poisonous snakes, no black widows, no scorpions here. Seems like a fair trade.
Never had a poisonous snake, black widow, or scorpion try to climb up in my bed. I guess it's all what you grow up with.
I've heard that centipedes are blind. Is that true? How do they always seem to find the beds then? And if you have a tall bed like someone else said, can they climb the bed posts? Do you put oil or vasaline or somthing on them?
Yuck yuck yuck! So many trips to Hawaii - all islands- and never seen one! How is that possible? I'm thinking ignorance is bliss because now I'll be looking for them...

Well I didn't see a centipede until I had been living here for 4 months and it wasn't even alive. I was clearing some dried leaves from the side of the house and there was a dead centipede in there.
I have yet to see a living one, or any other poisonous bug
Oh well... the way I see it, EVERYWHERE has some kind of creepy crawly creature that bites, stings or whatever... so I don't think this is all that big a deal... one would just have to learn what precautions to take in order to minimize the risk of being bitten, and learn what to do if you ARE bitten!
(And I know there are horror stories for everything, and it's obviously terrible if YOU become the horror story... but realistically, the vast majority of people are bound to survive life in Hawaii, creepy-crawlies and all, just fine!)
Just missed what would have been a really bad centipede experience over the weekend. We were on a cub scout camping trip with our boys. The boys had been having water fights wearing their Keen sandals. This morning our 7 year-old asked if he could wear his Crocs instead and I said sure. About an hour later, we started cleaning up the camp site. My wife picked up the kids Keens, and a six-inch centipede was inside! We were so fortunate -- the centipede could have crawled into the Crocs, into our other son's Keans, or our oldest could have put on the Keans (I know he wouldn't have checked). Or, my wife could have just grabbed the Keans without looking. Any one of those things would have led to a very painful experience. Instead, we just got a chopped-up centipede and a scare.
I still keep thinking we should catch these centipedes, cast them in fiberglass resin and sell them on eBay. Maybe make them into night lights or something totally gross li'dat.

This is why check shoes, coats, laundry etc... (dark and dank) if you live somewhere where centipedes are known to appear. When you grab a centipede you will get stung by the legs but not necessarily bit. If you have bad luck then both will happen.
You know if you been stung or bit by the holes left behind. The bite will leave 2 holes (usually) and the legs individual stings.
In the past I've always lived in the country and basically lived with them but now I am in a condo in Waikiki and nothing. No roaches, spiders, ants, centipedes nothing. The building sprays the units on a regular basis.
The one thing I do miss are the geckos. Growing up with there noise every night almost seems so strange that there aren't any here; that I don't hear the geckos anymore is sad to me.
