That's a pretty open ended question considering the distinct islands.
But for me, I'm a working professional with a 6 figure income in Honolulu - Mon-Fri is spent working, evenings relaxing or at the gym - on the weekend, its time to enjoy what Hawaii has to offer, the water, beach, hiking, bbq's.
As far as a hard working single mom on a budget - just realize, it is an expensive place and your money doesn't go as far in Hawaii. There are many single parents in Hawaii who have a fantastic life - but it will be a change coming from the mainland.
