Three months later, husband took a 2 week vacation from his mainland job. The owner flew both of us here, for 2 weeks. Owner paid for airfare, hotel room, rental car, + hourly wage. We made our decision after being here for 7 days.

We went back to the mainland, husband gave his notice to his mainland company. One week later, had minor surgery. 8 weeks later, we were living in a condo here. That was 2 years ago. We're still here.

He never had a written agreement. Never any type of contract. Lisa ;-)
Your move experience was very nice and certainly was the exception, rather than the rule. In most cases, Island-bound folks don't have the luxury of such pampering, so a contract serves as their protection. Obviously, there are cases where a contract was unnecessary and congratulations your husband's position worked out so well.

In my line of work we hire in many diff prostion from across the nation and the world along with they are paid in diff scale wages becuase of there job skills and experience

Yes i seen backlash over hireing someone outside the area to run a place or run a part of the business or bring in someone over every one else in the place and you get workers saying why did you not chose me to run it .

When you point out to some people that they do not have experience or skills in area that they are trying for .
Oh yes, and I didn't mean to say that a company shouldn't hire the most qualified candidate. Always it comes down to communication and management, which it seems was missing for the OP.

If a company strives to promote from within, the best way to achieve this is to start training people to move up. Spell out a clear progression path, help workers to know what they need to do to get there. But then also workers need to take responsibility for their own careers. You can't just do the job you are given every day, and expect a company to promote you. The people who get promoted are usually those who show initiative and take on more responsibility and learn the next job on their own.

I was just saying that sometimes it's a political decision. Poorly handled, but maybe not racial. It's too easy to point to something like racial, or even politics, when the real problem is a mishandling of the situation by management.

We have a program in our company that let you move up inside the company by going into the diff prostions and learning how to do them ..To get to the level that i'm in my company it takes about 12 years of working in the diff prostion in the company before you reach what is called in the upper circle or as the workers call it The Mafia inside the company..

We hire from around the world and it shows in how well our people can do the job ..

I'm good enough cook that i can fake my way though a few dish on the menu as long as i have the list of items to make the food in front of me and cooking times on the paper and i can fake my way through it .

but i know that i'm will never be a master chief who had years of training behind me to work in some of the place we have inside the Casino .

This my thing with new hires they have a habit of pointing out some of the older time grammer and spelling problems dureing company floor meeting and my boss pointed out to one such lady who had been hired ..

He goes yes i know some the old timers can spell worth a lick if they had a gun put to there head and said if you do not do it right i'm going to shoot you and he also add most of them would be dead and i would have to find bodys to put into there prostion that they hold and that would be good for some of you on the floor ..but you put them anywhere inside this business of our and i know they can do the job ..So it not so much about spelling and propler grammer in there reports that they file it about them doing the job the right way the first time and every time they walk through those doors comeing into work ..

plus he goes i also have a spelling and grammer also do you have a problem with my spelling and grammer in the emails and paperwork i send out in the workers .

The young lady standing there going no ..then he told you need to open your eyes and ears and shut you mouth and watch and listen to how the old timer do there job around here and learn from them becuase some of you are going to be replaceing them in a few years and you going to be the old timers in the company

Yes, I'm sure that's irritating to you. If I received messages from a supervisor similar to the posts you make I would have to seriously question the intelligence of upper management. And I'm sure I would be out the door quickly, either by myself or with somebody's boot up my butt.

That what my boss was trying to tell her there is no college course for my line of work it all OJT and you might have a business degree but it means nothing in our line of work ..

For it takes years of working inside the places to grain the knowage of how it works and why it run that way inside a casino and nightclub and hotel business and alot of the new hires who have there college degrees in hand when they come to work for us are made to start on the lowerest rung of the ladder and made to work jobs that they feel is beneath them because of there college education

I can send you to dealer school to learn how the games are played and how and what of the gameing that goes on but it teach time and working in the area to grain the knowage of how to do the job ..

I ask you can you lip read what a person is saying across the room if your working as a floor shift mgn in that area

Do you know what that person body langauge is tell you to watch out for

you have to know if a cocktail waitness hustleing something other than drinks on the floor

If the local call girl talent and there socalled mgns are working the floor that night

If the local drug dealers are trying to make your place of business there latest area for there business dealing

dealing with the drunks and stupid one who lost there money and they going to get it back one way or the another type moment

Can you watch how a shooter is handleing the dice in craps and see if they are cheating or moveing the odds around for a better pay off down the line to another person at the table

Can you bar back or bartend and make drinks and specials..

Do know how to handle front end check in to help with rush of guest checking in at the front desk

Do you know how to park the cars in the areas ..

Can you know how to do the bottle count at shift change or close out

Can you run a Z100 on the register to get the close out

Do you know how to short order cook if they need help in the kitchen

You have to have as we call it a Jack of All Trades way of thinking and a Master of nothing knowage of how the floor works on a busy night inside one of our places ..

There is many areas of my job that i have to knowage of how it works and new hires never get that part and that where most of them get themselfs into trouble with the old timers inside the company

Because i was Dyslexia i see things alot diff than a person who does not have the learning problems with Dyslexia person ..We see things that people miss or can not figure out because of the way our brian is wired in a total diff way than your brian fuction ..

My form of Dyslexia is called English Orthography in the form of writing out sentences and propler grammer and placemenet of the how and the way one sentence is writen and it was never caught by parents or teachers intill i joined the miliary and had a person tell me you not stupid or dumb you have a learning problem that all ..

I went to a learning specialist back in 2000 and they basic told me that was my problem i was never tested to see what the problem was back in the late 60s and mid 70s era of my school years

So my boss like that fact when i can look at the floor when i'm working and see things going on the floor at diff images of going through my head .. i seeing things that some people are missing because of them seeing one way and seeing in another way ..

Well, I do know how to park the cars in the areas, but all that other stuff you said is way beyond me. I like to think I'm observant but I know if I witnessed a crime I would be useless to the sketch artist trying to get some sort of idea who to look for. I wonder if that is something that can be trained?

I, too, am in an industry that recent college graduates are woefully unprepared for (semiconductor fabrication). I've been in the same business for 27 years, working my way up, and I like to think they'll keep me around because of that.

Oh gosh, that's awful. I'm really sorry your family had to experience this. It's not always paradise in paradise, I suppose. I hope you guys can bounce back from this. Who knows? This is possibly for the best.
