With the strict Hawaiian laws on guns, what is the best way to bring/transfer guns to Hawaii from the mainland when moving?

1. contact the police department of the county you will be in, find out their rules for transporting to them for registration.
2. Most just bring it in their household goods and take it to the police when they arrive.
3. when registered, take them home and enjoy

Just got my AR-15 registered. It was sent in the mail from the mainland. You can mail rifles or shotguns but no handguns. You can bring guns as checked baggage on the airlines. When you get your firearm on the island (Oahu) not sure about other islands, take it to the police station to the firearms registration division, must be in a secure carrying case, photo id, fill out some papers, they do a check on you and the gun, fingerprint you and give you your registration papers on the spot. Oh! and the best part of the process is its FREE!!! when you bring guns from the mainland. Like I said I just done this 2 weeks ago and dont think I forgot any details, but do get there early it takes about 45 minutes. Now the next big thing is that there is only 1 public gun range on the island. If you are military there are other options.

if you have a lot, also check with your airlines if there is a limit. i think delta has a limit of 10.

you will need some kind of proof that you have training. hunter's ed, nra training, or letter from co.

i believe there's a limit of how many days you have to register it, but i don't think they actually look for proof of when the firearm came to the islands. but you don't have to deal with the 14 day waiting period, that's the nice thing about bringing in firearms. here's a link to their page:

Permit to Aquire (http://www.honolulupd.org/info/gun134-2.htm - broken link)

almost forgot. if you haven't yet. you probably need to read up on the laws about where to keep and transporting. and store your +10 mags out of state.

here's a forum for hawaii firearms bugs, it seems pretty active and they can provide you more detailed answer to questions:
