Hello all. I've looked around and real a lot on here about life in Hawaii. My situation is a little different but not unique. I will be able to retire in about 8-9 years. I have two sons, both with mental challenges. I've seen some places, one in particular is Helemano at the Dole Plantation that is an assisted living and employment locale for adults with needs like my sons. Does anyone else know of more places on Oahu?

My next question, as a retiree in Hawaii with a good pension, what do you suggest purchase or rent and what area would be best for a retiree? I've seen Kanehoe mentioned a lot.

It does depend upon what a "good" pension may be; but yes, Kaneohe and Kailua are nice places to retie to. There are different programs available for your sons (depending upon their ages) and if you tell me their ages I may be able to recommend a couple that may meet their needs.

I hope that all goes well for you and that your retirement is all that you are hoping it to be!

When I do retire, my boys will be in their early 20's. I appreciate your reply/

Thanks for replying. There is Hale Nani on Pensacola (downtown), the Plaza assisted living on Lunalilo (downtown),. These are two that I am the most familiar with- they are mainly retirement communities although they do have sections for young adults.

I must say that I was unsuccessful when looking for a program for my own son, He (only) has Asperger's and it was impossible to any type of help for him (the whole over 19 under 65 thing!).

I would say that your best bet would be to contact Hawaii Centers for Independent Living- they have the whole database available that would most likely help your children. They can at least point you in the right direction.

Aloha!
