We have rice and Spam too. Mom made rice like oatmeal for breakfast regularly (in addition to cooking with it) and dad LOVED fried Spam, bless him. He ate it for breakfast meat instead of ham or bacon quite a lot. Our local bread staple was always a loaf of Sourdough (which locals/natives just call "French Bread") in kitchen. Had it almost every night with dinner.

For those you hate or can't tolerate milk you better make sure you get your calcium and Vitamin D from another source (which isn't easy).

Now there you go, HC! Why don't people point out the cost of Spam rather than the cost of milk?

It's pretty expensive here...I forget how much, but we were surprised. I'll have to look next time I go shopping and report back. We bought a couple of cans of it to see how we'd like it. Sliced thin and cooked like bacon, it's pretty good!

So, how much does a can of Spam cost in HI?

$2.50ish depending on where you get it and if it is on sale.

It's not particularly hard, no. Matter of fact, in Hawai'i you'd have to be unusually deliberate to avoid getting enough Vitamin D just from your exposure to daylight.

Leafy greens like collard greens and kale are excellent for calcium, as is most tofu. Sardines and salmon are good sources for both calcium and Vitamin D. There are many others, including both soy and almond milk.

Frankly, because many of them have never even seen a can of Hawai'i's Official State Food before they got here, so they have no real idea what a can should cost.

On the other hand, it's not uncommon to see three or four different varieties of Spam on a supermarket shelf in Hawai'i, and this is perhaps the only place in the US where you will routinely see sales prices listed on full cases. Every 7-Eleven has ready to eat Spam musubi for sale, even McDonalds has Spam. Hawaiians eat more Spam per person than any other place on Earth except Guam. So the prices are competitive.

My comment was tongue-in-cheek. The stuff was totally off my radar until we started researching our move.

Lets just say its not nearly as easy if you exclude milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream. Most Asian women I know purposely drink calcium fortified soy milk often since many are lactose intolerant and Asian women are as prone to osteoporosis as Northern European women (who generally can eat dairy). At least take a supplement.

And the irony is that the latest studies I've read show that drinking milk contributes to increased osteoporosis in older women.

Increasing the amount of dark green leafy vegetables in the diet is a non-controversial way to add calcium to the diet. And for those who just can't abide kale, Tums are an easily obtainable and inexpensive supplement. Generic calcium carbonate is even cheaper.

And who doesn't like a nice sardine sandwich?
