As far as I know, it is because Queen Lilioukalani didn't want her people killed by the marines that took over the palace and sent a letter to the U.S. president to get him to call them off instead of fighting a war. Unfortunately, there was turmoil in Washington D.C. at that time so when they finally got around to dealing with the hostile (and illegal) takeover of the Hawaiian Islands, they figured it had already been so long they may as well leave it as it was. It was a takeover initiated by the merchants who didn't want to give back the crown privileges that King Kalakaua had previously given them. I suspect the merchants talked with folks in Washington and wanted to keep the islands instead of removing the invading force.
One of the kings of Hawaii did try to marry one of the Hawaiian princesses to a Japanese prince at one point but it fell through for some reason, I forget why.

It does make an interesting topic of discussion and a change from "I am moving to Hawaii with $5,000 and no job skills and need a 3 bedroom house with a fenced yard that will accept 3 large dogs"
Well, then the rest of us can discuss the topic, I suppose. If he brings up something interesting, then it's a good thing, isn't it?
I dunno. This one could get heated pretty quick. But...I have to admit it's a clever way to ask the question and not imply wrong doing or drama. And...

Perhaps we could assist by composing a list of non-drama questions for them? I'll start:
Why are some coconut trees tall and skinny, and some shorter and stouter?
Why do some beaches have black sand instead of white sand?
Which state consumes the most Spam, is it still Hawaii?
What is that little apostrophe-looking-mark in some written Hawaiian words?
Does Hawaii have billboards?
What is the largest island in the state?
Will I need an umbrella when I visit?
