In my opinion, having a bad attitude causes more difficulty with finding employment than being a haole does.

Neither one helps with the job search but a bad attitude is easier to hide than one's haole-ness.

And if you're local and connected a bad attitude may be easily overlooked, especially if the bad attitude is owned by someone who has influential relatives.

You really have to see some of the stuff that goes on here to believe it. Absolutely sickening, at times. And yes, there are employees who, because of their connections, are damn near totally untouchable, no matter what they do. Not only untouchable but also recipients of incredible favoritism, tipping the scales even more their way. They can do no wrong and get rewarded handsomely for just being who they happen to be. People go out of their way to do them favors, hoping that some of the favoritism will be passed on to them by association.

And, IME, the favored ones are NEVER haoles...EVER. And haoles get fired at a much higher rate, for stuff that the favored ones could do and come out totally unscathed. Seen it happen, many more times than once.

Great for workplace morale.

Don't understimate the workplace BS here, OWS. It's not just idle b**ching from disguntled postal workers. Oh wait...ever seen a haole working in a post office here? Me neither.

whtviper1, I like the stats, but I'd believe them a little more if I hadn't been told at so many interviews that no one would ever hire a "haole chick."
While there certainly are places that prefer locals and non-whites, the idea that being white and from the mainland means you're limited to $9/hr jobs is ridiculous. Whites have higher average incomes than any group in Hawaii other than Japanese Which Ethnic Group Makes the Most Money? - Hawaii Business - October 2013 - Hawaii. Many managers, presidents, and business owners in Hawaii as well as our last two governors are whites from the mainland. There clearly are places in Hawaii that will not discriminate against you for being a "haole chick." Find those places and you should be fine.

I'm not denying that this happens, but if whites are discriminated against so much, why do they still have higher average incomes than other groups in Hawaii including Filipinos, blacks, Hispanics, and Pacific Islanders? Some say that Asians have an advantage in Hawaii, but even Chinese earn less on average than whites.

You say that like all post office workers are rich or something.

How many Filipinos, Pacific Islanders, Hispanics, and blacks are politicians, presidents, and managers in Hawaii? How many went to Punahou? How many live in million dollar houses? Due to their higher average incomes and educational attainment, whites (including those from the mainland) are well-represented in all of those while the aforementioned groups are under-represented.

Sorry to add to this controversial thought but Caucasians definitely make more money in Hawaii versus other racial groups.

I do think an equally qualified Asian and Caucasian make about the same but so many unskilled Asians come to Hawaii and they skew the numbers.
