For the uninitiated, WWOOF means Worldwide Work Opportunities on Organic Farms, an informal work exchange program for people who want to stay on organic farms in exchange for work.

Executive Summary: It's definitely Buyer Beware with Hawaiian wwoofing sites. Some are good and some are very bad. Locally the horror stories seem more numerous than anything else. Be sure you have a good way to get back home if things don't work out the way you expected.

Also use the Search function here on the term WWOOF to pull up previous mentions. I see at least 50.

In any case, here's a resource for wwoofing... http://www.wwoofhawaii.org/hosts/listing

Check out Paradise Farms on South Point Road on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is in a very isolated area, but I met some kids who were wwoofing there and they really liked it. They said the owners were nice people.

I just googled "wwoof Hawaii blog" and found some relevant sites. They might give you some testimonials, tips, and contacts.

From what I can see, some of the WWOOF horror stories are from people who didn't realize that farming is long hard work.

A few of them do sound pretty bad, like inadequate food provided, but that is not the usual complaint. Still, you'd want to understand exactly what you were signing up for.

Each WWOOFing situation is different, too, so you'll have to sift through to find the ones suitable for you.

When you have a few that you're interested in, you could post here to inquire if the area the farm is in would be suitable for you or not. A farm in Pahoa will be a lot different than one in Hana or Kaunakakai.

What sort of things are you looking for? That might help you choose which island. Is there any crop you're more interested in?

It's very pretty, very rural, a long walk to anywhere.
