Hello!
I am a New Yorker who seems to be afflicted with a problem that many people have. Every time I go to Hawaii, I leave with the feeling that I should move there for a year or two (and maybe more.) After a couple of years of having the nagging feeling, I am giving it serious consideration.
The rental market in NYC is high, and keeps getting worse with every year... so I am actually pleased with the price of rentals in all areas of Oahu. Is it difficult to rent an apartment? Or is it as simple as having first and last month rent/security deposit/and great credit?
Also, I have many years (8+) experience as a career bartender in well known NYC "hot spots." Will my experience be enough to land a job at a high volume bar, or is it highly competitive to get a job in the industry? Do you need to know someone who knows someone, etc? (That is how it is in NYC as well.)

I know that I sometimes become frustrated with the fact that so many people come to NYC to live for a couple of years and are willing to pay such high rent that it ends up driving the rent up higher and higher, leaving long-time residents to struggle with the cost of living. Is there a similar attitude amongst the locals? Do the locals hate when people come from the mainland to live and work?

Thank you for reading. I look forward to hearing your opinions!!!

My suggestion would be to definitly work in Waikiki....thats where the money is....My bro is a waiter/bartender on Oahu. (he has tons of experience as well) It took him about a year to get in with the locals to where he could get dakine job there. I know he had to start as a barback first. There are alot of people applying when the GOOD bartender jobs come up. Start with the hotels when applying.
