Flights from Oahu to the mainland as low as $49 each way! Looking at scheduled pricing over the next few months it looks like there will finally be some truly affordable options for the islands.

Absolutely great!

I just looked for a weekend getaway HNL-KOA on memorial weekend (I usually hop to other islands if there's a 3 day weekend, using very similar flight departure/arrival hours for both: )

Southwest: $97 roundtrip

Hawaiian: $179 roundtrip

See ya Hawaiian and hello to Southwest!!!

Much needed and welcomed competition. I suspect Hawaiian prices should start to fall as well....

I was surprised that Southwest is offering inter-island flights. I’m sure most of the passengers are tourists, but how common is it for locals to visit other islands?

Inter-island is a very high demand market. Not sure if there are data on how many % are locals vs tourists, but when I've been on inter-island flights, I see a lot of locals.

Lot of tourists may be based out of HNL/OGG/KOA/LIH, and hop over to the other island as part of their vacation and come back.

Also locals include family visits (many locals have family on other islands), pleasure visits (lot of rich retirees and others who have the means to just go for a weekend getaway), special occasion (certain state holidays/celebrations/festivals, etc.) business trips, and school/college (sporting teams and college friends visiting/etc)

If you have family/friends that you can stay with/borrow their car or have transportation on the other islands, its much more affordable to do a inter-island visit. Otherwise it can be expensive to have to get a hotel and a rental car for every weekend getaway

Hawaiian flies tons of flights inter-island and it is going to be a very welcome addition to have another big player in here to break up the monopoly for a bit.
