"Company officials plan to announce specific routes at a later date, but did reveal that they will begin on the West Coast, with the first flights from California. Inter-island flights are also a possibility."
After having to recently pay Hawaiian their rip off $200 domestic change flight fees for 5 of our staff ($1,000 in fees total) due to a change of work schedule, this is welcome news. Will also be great to be able to check in two bags for free. The best news is Hawaiian will be finally forced to lower their prices and change their policies.

SW = free
HA = we paid somewhere around $35 (x2) each way (x2). About $140.
We almost didn't bring them because of the charge, but glad we did. If SW was in the game when we went you could be damn sure we would have went with them. Even if, although unlikely, their fares are the same or a tad higher, the lower or total lack of fees will make up for it.

I prefer to fly Hawai'ian over SWA's cattle cars, but I'm sitting on almost 1 million SWA miles, so I've sort of been hoping they'd enter the Hawai'i market.
It's been awhile since we have had airfare wars, be nice to be able to afford to fly around more.
Last time it was between Hawaiian and Aloha and Hawaiian had just upgraded all their planes and beat down the wages for their staff so they survived the air fare wars and Aloha's passenger service stopped. Aloha survived as a cargo airline.
There was Mahalo Air for awhile, but they're gone. And those other odd one who never really got to use the main part of the airports but had better rates. ATA, wasn't it? They just went *poof* gone in the middle of Merrie Monarch and left a lot of folks stranded all over the place. Hopefully after this airline war, there won't be a bunch of folks stranded again.
I wouldn't count on airfare going lower - and the flights are probably a year away. Want lower airfare? Gas needs to go lower and the economy tanks.
Not counting on airfare dropping. I have no issues with that. It's the nickel and dime you to death fees that set SW and Hawaiian apart. Last checked SW and Hawaiian pay similar costs for fuel.
Last checked SW and Hawaiian pay similar costs for fuel.
Airlines don't pay pump prices - they often have wide variances between each other. They place almost casino like bets on fuel hedging - sometimes they lose badly, it is why the Hawaiian CFO lost his job a few years ago.
So, point is - I wouldn't assume they pay the same for fuel.
There is an interesting (at least to me) history between these organizations - on the one hand, Hawaiian poached to Southwest CFO several years back (the one who got fired) whose main job was fuel hedging - Southwest a few years ago poached the Hawaiian person in charge of revenue management (the team that determines what you pay for a ticket) which to me was just as much of a sign they would enter Hawaii
