So i am a younger male living on the mainland with a part time job and ssdi due to some chronic health issues. I am currently homeless as rent is astronomical where i live and i just dont make enough money to be able to afford it. This winter is proving to be an arctic hell and those who have never been on the streets in a brutal winter will never be able to understand how harsh it is.

As prospects are bleak for things to change anytime soon i have been contemplating heading to hawaii for the winter to spare myself living through this any longer. My questions are what would be the best island for someone like me to be on? What places would be safe/safer from criminals, homeless addicts etc? Where would be good places to spend the nights and be able to get clean?

Also, are people in Hawaii generally friendly or would they look at me as just another vagabond from the mainland (i bet 99.99% of the time no one would be able to tell that i was homeless anyway, but i thought i would ask)?

Thank you to those who answer this.

How about heading south on the mainland? Then you'll be able to move around without having to have the $$$ for airfare. If you go south enough, Mexico is very inexpensive. Warm, too.

In Hawaii, there's loads of other folks trying for the same resources and since it's islands, there's only so much room and resources.

I worked with a lady on Kauai who was homeless. She came over with her 19 year-old son and 14 year-old daughter. They all managed to get minimum wage jobs but still could not find a place to live so they camped. She said it was tough since someone always had to stay at their tent due to theft so they had to work their schedules around someone always being there. She also said there were many stray cats that constantly peed on all their things. I don't think there is anywhere safe to be homeless if you are around other people. You cannot secure your belongings and theft is always an issue. Drugs are as well. People are in general more accepting it seems and I saw many hitchhikers get picked up and usually sitting in the back of pick up trucks. So it doesn't seem too hard to get around that way.
As for my work friend, she lasted about 6 months before moving back.

I worked with homeless folks on Oahu before moving to Kauai, and my advice is not to come here at all. Move somewhere south like hotzcatz suggested. Just because Hawaii is beautiful and warm doesn't mean being homeless is better here. When I worked on Oahu, my clients were subjected to physical and sexual assault, having their belongings stolen, threats and intimidation by other homeless folks, police sweeps, and many other things. You won't have any allies here that can look out for you and that makes you easy pickings for a good roll.

There are organizations in Hawaii that pay for homeless/destitute mainlanders to go back to where they came from. Think about that.

Have you ever done any reading about the homeless crisis we have here? You sound very naive.

Yes, just a "vegabond" - but more likely worse than that.

We don't make the best cities to be homeless list -

But we do make the top 10 worst places to be homeless -
