My mother said it was the end for me when I dropped out of the 11th grade. Two careers later, and a family raised - I’m fine.

Yes, need to be careful of being overly pessimistic or overly cautious, which can be just as bad as being overly aggressive. Being overly pessimistic can hurt much more than exercising a reasonable amount of caution. It's definitely not a good personal character trait IMO and not a hallmark of a leader. It's one of the main reasons why ige is struggling so much.

If you telling me this thing has a 70% death rate, yeah maybe i'd buy into the gloom and doom, but 17 deaths total and 3 hospitalizations? That's nothing. Just heart disease claims 150X more lives in hawaii in a single year. The flu kills 37X more deaths in a year in hawaii.

Glad someone has common sense here. Sure covid has a higher contagion rate but the numbers show it is way less lethal for most of the population.
Keep wearing masks. Avoid crowded public spaces, events. Wash, wash and wash your hands. Open up the economy. All will be well.

Agreed, and I actually get why some people have bought into the doom and gloom.

That's ok, if you are fearful, have underlying conditions, elderly, obese - buy N95 masks and stay away from tourist areas - shelter in place. Ultimately, a vaccine is likely - but also likely to be 50% effective. If Covid doesn't get you - the upcoming flu season might or it might be heart disease. You have to decide your risk tolerance.

On Tuesday (2 days ago):

*60,000 new U.S. cases in one day. A record.
*1,100 new deaths. Fortunately, the death rate is decreasing.

131,000 now dead from the virus.

The U.S. infection rate is 30X the rate in Canada. A willingness to wear masks, like Asia has been cited as a possible reason.

131,000 died that had the virus - the virus didn't necessarily kill them all

How many of them have you decided that your statement applies to? 1,000? 10,000? Half?

How about people who died in car accidents and were positive? Were they counted as Covid deaths?

I haven't decided.

However, 32% of the deaths had heart disease, 30% had diabetes, and 18% chronic lung disease. Now include those with kidney disease, liver disease, and immunocompromised conditions and the numbers start to get really high.

I'll add what I've been saying all along - if you are elderly or have a pre-existing condition, buy a N95 mask, shelter in place - and be careful.

But, for those of us healthy - the odds are overwhelming you either won't get sick - or it will be mild.

From a different perspective then.

How many of the 131,000 would likely be dead today if Covid-19 had not come along?

I don't know -

But, from a different perspective then:

How many of 131,000 would be dead had they worn a N95 mask, sheltered in place - and were careful?

And by careful, meaning avoiding large gatherings - how many needless deaths were from those with underlying conditions who went to packed church services - you can't make this stuff up
