I am considering a sailboat in Hawaii in the 30 to 36 foot range. I currently have a Cascade 36 Pilothouse. Where might moorage be available? How long is the waiting list for non residents? Thanks

There are also a few private marinas, but you'd have to contact them for their waiting lists and fees. Ko'olina, La Mariana, there's one in Kaneohe Bay and what's the name of the one which used to be Amfac? It's there in Keehi Lagoon between LaMariana and the state docks.

Some of the yacht clubs have docks, you'd have to contact them. Waikiki YC, Hawaii YC and there's one in Kaneohe, too. There might be some moorings at the docks behind a few select Hawaii Kai houses, but that's mostly powerboats since there is a fairly low bridge to get under before getting to the ocean.

Default Hi--are you still checking these posts? Wanna sail in Feb 2013?

Is there any interest in sailing during the month of Feb 2013? Trying to plan a trip and find some crew....the open ocean sounds fun....and a little bit scary....but why not!?!

Default Boating from Oahu

I am considering purchasing a 26ft cruiser on Oahu and bringing it back to Kauai with me. Apart from all the necessary precautions I'm taking to prepare. Can anyone recommend the safest route and time of summer to travel? Experienced boat owner but have yet to travel inter-island.....mahalo

I've done some inter-island navigating but never Oahu to Kauai. It might help to know where you are leaving from and where you're headed, but generally speaking, keep a close eye on the forecast and depart at daybreak is all I can suggest. You might want to ask around the harbor to see if anyone else has a trip to Kauai planned and buddy up for your first crossing.

There is a period of time when you're out of sight of both Oahu and Kauai, but it's not very long. There's a dog leg when entering Nawiliwili harbor so unless you've sailed in and out of Nawiliwili before, don't do that at night. The fishing is pretty good between the two islands, we've caught some nice ones when sailing between Oahu and Kauai.

Which harbor are you leaving from? Will you be able to do a few shakedown cruises before heading off to Kauai, I hope?
