I think people with white skins have more problems with "race" in Hawai'i than any other group because they are not in the majority here. Asians are. And both Asians and Native Hawaiians have strong cultural networks here, and respect for ohana is important in family life and in business. But that isn't about race. It's about how people relate to each other.

And how people relate to you starts with how you relate to them. If you relate to others in such a way that your differences are an issue, they will be an issue. I don't relate to people that way. I appreciate our differences, and our commonalities. And for me, there is no problem. Honestly. Everyone is ohana to me. And people respond to that.

For the most part this WON'T happen. BUT! There IS a pretty big anti white sentiment here in the islands. I'm white, have lived on oahu for 15 years, and while for the most part my day to day life isn't bad, I've certainly had more than my share of experiences with this. When I started high school here (right after I moved here from the mainland) I was beaten up for being 'Haole' maybe 3 or 4 times (and trust me it wasn't for being obnoxious or anything. I was always the quiet kid in the back who kept to himself) Since then I've been jumped numerous times over the year for no better reason than being an effin haole. My cars been broken into and/or vandalized numerous times and I've found out that one of the reasons my car gets targeted is because I have military stickers on my car (I'm not military but I work on base) I found this out because me and a group of friends drove out to north shore for a day at the beach. When we all got back to our cars 4 out of the 6 cars in our group had their windows smashed in while the other 2 were left untouched. the only difference between us 4 who got hit and the 2 that didn't? We all had military stickers. And it just wasn't our cars, they went after A whole bunch of cars in the parking lot. All of them with military stickers.

And thats just some of the things that have happened to me. And like I said, I'm a quiet kind of guy. I'm 28 y/o don't drink or party or anything like that, and I just try my hardest to be respectable of other people.

And just to be fair, If you were watching the news a few years back, Pres. bush was visiting the islands. One of his aides or advisors or whatever got jumped in waikiki, beaten up pretty severely, and robbed. A couple years before that there was the case of the local kids (I think they were like 10 or 12) who caught the japanese girl on fire at a bus stop.

There are a number of military that are plain jerks. Transient to the Islands, they make for an easy target. I would not put military stickers on your car if you can help it. It just draws attention.

I find that if I talk slowly, loud enough and repeat myself enough times most people here understand my English

Can anyone explain Kill a Haole Day?

Sound racist to me!

If you think it's fake or made up Google it "Kill a Haole Day"

At this juncture it's pretty much just an Urban Legend. There was a real incident many years ago at one school that got blown out of proportion by a sensational news story... wouldn't happen today, right?

Then in the 70s/80s there were some beatdowns in some places, water balloons in others, and the story got repeated enough times that it now keeps being brought up again and again despite the many, many efforts to kill the myth. See, you just did it. Go back and read the threads that come up in a Google search, the real accounts by real teachers and students who were there. If you read the backstories, there's no reason to raise the question again today.

Didja hear the one about the neckers on Lover's Lane who heard a story on the radio about an escaped murder with a hook for a hand, and they decided to head home, and when they got there they found a hook hanging from one of the door handles?

Same same thing.
