There is only one thing I have come across that is cheaper here then the Mainland and that is the price for a ticket to the movies. On Kauai there is only one theater with 4 screens and ticket costs are $5 each for first showings and $8 for later. Kids tickets are $5 all day. I believe tickets in Los Angeles before I left 16 months ago where in the $12 range.

We can get Yellow Tail wine for less than $6 a bottle, a couple of bucks less than we could in Colorado.

Don't have to pay for parking as much as you do here in LA. Or the ever-popular, non-optional, valet parking.

"shoes" - well, perhaps mainland folks would consider them not quite shoes, but you can get a pair of rubber slippers at the grocery store for $1.99. That's pretty inexpensive for shoes.

Papala niu! They fall off the tree and with just a bit of weaving, voila!

low mileage older cars

On the mainland, it's REALLY hard to find a 5-year old car with only 50,000 miles, or a 10 year old car with only 100,000 miles. Much easier to find them here... at least on Maui. There's just nowhere to drive.

Seems like it's easier to find a car here for less than $8,000. Not totally sure, but it does seem like it.

Farmers markets... seems like there are more of them here, only takes 15 minutes to drive to one. Much harder to find a farmer's market on the mainland. And, food generally costs less at the farmer's markets.

Car maintenance, repairs, tires, etc. In ONE way... when you drive fewer miles in a year, you spend less money on repairs.

Cars are cheaper here because they are beat to death by the poor roads. Tires get shredded by sharp, lava cinders and you need more repairs, again due to the poor roads. The salt air causes corrosion, not just in rusty body panels, but also wreaks havoc on electrical connectors. Add in rodents that love to chew on wires and that is why used cars can be cheaper here. They are not a bargain.

Oh, okay.... good to hear a different perspective. Lower priced, but not a bargain... makes sense.
