Okay, so I know all about the rabies vaccines and the quarantine process for bringing a dog into Hawaii. The reason being that there is no rabies on any of the islands. With that said, after your dog has gone through this whole process, will he/she still need to be vaccinated for rabies regularly if he/she doesn't leave the islands?

Technically, YES.
In reality, the typical dog owner on the islands is a careless, thoughtless individual who does not take care of their dog(s) properly, leaves them tied up 24x7 outside with little attention and not much more care than food and water.

BTW, according to the state Department of Ag, there has never been a case of a cat or dog having been found to have rabies - and yet they still continue with the convoluted process to bring in dogs/cats.

Well the cats and dogs are thoroughly examined for rabies before allowed to be released onto the island(s).

Our dogs don't get rabies shots, but they do get heartworm treatment, flea drops and the 7 in 1 shots every other year.

The rabies thing is serious, though. There is a law on the books that says if a case of rabies is found in the islands ALL domestic dogs and cats can be summarily confiscated and killed.

I guess we aren't typical, we forget to tie the dogs to trees. As for being outside, they have a handle on the bottom of the screen door so they can let themselves inside any time they want to. The cat has figured out how to work the door now, too, so he can go in and out, too. Thank goodness for those robot vacuum cleaners!

I just checked the website and my two just passed their blood test. Happy dance! Now, I can rest easy until closer to our departure date later in the summer. We are just passing through for a three year tour, however, I will still do the responsible thing and get their shots.

Can't wait to get there!

Cool Well...

Hmmm... I suppose the 'convoluted process' could be the reason there has never been nor will ever be a case of rabies in the Hawaiian Islands. But, just one other question mdand3boys, why did you move to the Big Island? You truly have nothing very nice to say about it's inhabitants or their lifestyles, yet you continue to preach. Just curious but would like to know.

Let me rephrase that - the dept of ag has admitted that no dogs/cats have ever been found to have rabies BEFORE they arrived, meaning that all of the testing that is required wasn't as necessary as they make it out to be.

Apparently, you haven't read enough of my posts to form a correct opinion. I tell it straight - no lying about what people are going to run into. I have not posted all negative comments, either.

Mdand3boys, I have been on this forum for little less than two weeks and have read mostly your threads, not by choice, and the grand majority of them tend to lean toward the negative side. Just an observation.

When (if) you get to Hawaii you will very soon see how the average person treats their dogs. Some people, do treat their animals much better than that.
Drive through any subdivision or neighborhood and tell me what you find.
Am I being truthful or negative? Do you know the difference? I am not going to pretend that everything is perfect. Perfect does not exist anywhere. People need to be aware of what they may be getting themselves into - both the good and the bad.
