The Maku'u farmers market is right off of 130, between Kea'au and Pahoa. It's open on Sundays I believe from 8am-2pm.

Don't forget to try the papaya salad from the Thai stand when going to the Hilo or Maku'u markets! (Not sure if she sells at the other markets too...)

The farmers market in Waimea is great. I think it's 7am to noon on Saturdays. Don't know how corrupt the vendors are but it is fun to just walk around and check it out.

There isn't much of a "farmer's market" left. It has transformed into a bazaar/flea market.

The Waimea Farmers Market is mostly all farmers who grew the stuff sitting on the table in front of them. There is also another farmer's market in Waimea at the other end of town across from Waimea Park. (The one with the wooden things in the playground). Those folks produce everything on the table in front of them, too. There's a guy there who brings a big wood fired bread oven and bakes bread at the farmer's market.

I know that the OP asked about the Big Island, but I'm interested in knowing about any good farmers markets on Oahu—good meaning actual farmers, not resellers.

You can still get good homemade papaya salad, awesome fresh made salsas, fresh, organic goat cheese and plenty of organic greens. You can also get pretty ono BBQ, as well as fresh pizza. There are plenty of plants and trees to check out if you're intersted too.

I'd say it's definately worth a trip.

We were at Maku'u market yesterday, bought local snow peas, jicama, bok choy, REAL tomatoes and tamales for dinner. We spent under $10. We still have salad makings for two for most of the week. So much better quality than the garbage sold in the local grocery stores. There are some vendors that sell produce from wholesalers, but it's pretty obvious and easy to avoid. There were lots of plants and crafts as usual and the "garage sale" treasures. I noticed most of the second hand stuff was segregated to the front row by the highway. Good idea. There is lots of parking, although the way it's set up is confusing.
