I just got back from a friend from childhood. Haven't seen her for five years. She is a very smart woman, but I don't think she keeps up on health news. She is about 60 pounds overweight, and has arthiritis in her knees. Her husband has recently developed heart problems. We are all in our early to mid 60's.
She told me that they eat a lot of tilapia and I have briefly searched the web and see that it is not the best to eat. In fact the article said that those who have arthiritis and or heart disease should avoid it?
I've read that it's bad for asthmatics because something in the fish can cause inflammation. I guess that's why it would be bad for someone with heart issues? I don't know where I read that info, although I think it was in one of the online asthma newsletters I get.
Well, tilapia is a bottom feeder....so who knows what that fish eats. Some people even compare it to eating rats and consider it a very unclean fish. As any fish, it provides some protein, calcium and fat. It tastes delicious though, but it's never my choice of fish.
It's not my choice of fish either, but I would imagine that the way they prepare it could be part of the problem. It's too thin to grill, doesn't really have much flavor to steam it and many people like it fried. It's pretty good in fish tacos with some spicy slaw and lime juice to jazz up the flavor.
I have asthma and I've never had an issue eating Tilapia. I really question if it's the Tilapia that is causing your friend's problem, or the secret twinkies. Unless one is frying it in tons of bad oil, I don't see the problem.
I dredge mine in egg and then panko and then use Pam and bake it in the oven.
Hmm, I stand corrected. I don't believe this article, but here it is:

Any feedback will be appreciated.
There is a very real possibility that farmed fish is fed with GMO corn, which is not proven to be healthy to humans. Also, as in any factory-farmed meat product, there are no doubt, antibiotics and other types of chemicals used the process.

That is the article that I read and caused my concern. Don't know if I should mention it to her or not.........you know the old saying of unasked for advice. I have mentioned in the past of certain healthy, colorful foods, but I don't believe she really wants to hear any of it.

I really think, and I say this as an overweight person, that the weight issue is more vital than the Tilapia issue. Weight will make arthritis worse and be worse on the heart. I'd find out HOW she cooks the tilapia and then maybe say something. However, being 60 lbs overweight is really an issue. And I say this as someone who has put on more than that since 2007, unfortunately. I blame my weight for everything - from aching feet to a lot of things. I know the difference that gaining that much weight makes and, IMHO, it supercedes what kind of fish a person eats.
If there is some way to encourage them both to take up a walking program on a regular basis (maybe even you could meet them saying you don't like to walk alone and you'd like some walking buddies), that would be my first step. Walking is so important and one must exercise to really lose the weight. I'd worry about the weight first, the tilapia second.

You are right, of course. Her lifestyle..........lots of stress and being a realtor 24/7 does not allow much time. The cooking of the tilapia is a sauteed version. Not too bad. I would just like her to try to eat healthier, and be aware of the pros and cons.
Now I know what a born again Christian must feel like. I feel the need to tell people about the dangers of chemical in foods, plastic water bottles, microwave use, and the right supplement to take. Maybe I better just keep all my opinions to myself
