I get them now and then but used to get them a lot more and I haven't even begun menopause yet!

Normally, it is a relief but my husband drags me off to Puerto Rico in Jan/Feb. Yeah, most people would love to spend the winters in the tropics but I prefer to stay in New England because it does help with the hot flashes.

The hotflashes don't bother me--I'm glad to have them b/c I'm running so late--I'm 56 and only just started having them in July. What is pissing me off though is having to get up 4 or more times a night to pee and then not being able to get back to sleep.

what was very helpful for me was acupuncture, and Chinese herbs, this really "evened things out" for me
ask around, find someone who is familiar working with peri-menopausal symptoms

I never had hot flashes and neither did my nanny. For my sister it lasted 2 years. She used more alcohol in her life than I did.

Perhaps. I suffered most of the time for decades. I missed days at school and work. I've slept on a stack of towels and worn Depends. OTC medications, a Hot Toddy, and a heating pad would afford me an hour or two of sleep. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Menopause was short with few complications.

I read that there is no word for 'hot flash' in the Japanese language. The Japanese eat one thing most Americans do not eat: seaweed. Seaweed is high in iodine, a mineral used by the whole body but especially the thyroid, the breasts, the prostate, the hypothalamus, and the skin.

I started eating seaweed 2 years ago and have not had one hot flash since.

Mine started at age 50, just a few mild ones per day. Then by age 52 they were much worse, I went on HRT and they were gone completely. Tried to wean myself off HRT and they came roaring back, 10-15 per day with about 3 being total meltdown, sweat running from my face and scalp all the way down my back, even my legs were sweating! So I went back on HRT for a year and ended up in the ER with deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in calf). So no more HRT for me. That was about 1 and 1/2 years ago. My doc was willing to let me try any prescription that would supposedly help, we tried everything from Paxil to gabapentin. I tried Amberen, I tried Estroven, black cohosh, everything, nothing helped even a little. I had electric fans in every room. I was having at least 20 flashes per day, about 6 or more were total meltdowns. I would wake up drenched at least 4 times per night. Suddenly about 2 months ago I went from ^^^THAT^^^ to having maybe 3 or 4 teeny tiny flashes per day. I hope this is the end (I'm 56). I feel like I won't be sure that I'm over it until hot weather returns next summer. Meanwhile I am SO happy to be almost done with them. Starting to feel like a normal person again.

I never had the feelings of dread or anxiety, but I definitely had triggers which included: anything even remotely stressful, heat, exercise, sunshine, red wine, spicy food, embarrassment, etc. Plus many which had no trigger at all. I also had RAGING mood swings. I feel so sorry for the way I sometimes acted to my hubby.

I've tried it, it didn't help. That's not to say that it wouldn't help someone else-just not me.
