I am in the 6th year of hot flashes. I feel that I am coping well without HRT so have no plans to use it at this point. After 6 years they are coming less frequently and are less intense than in years past. However, I am very much looking forward to a time when this is concluded.

If you have not used hormones I would like to know how many years your hot flashes went on for before they finally stopped. I need something positive to visualize!

Thanks for contributing!

I'm in my 5th year and STILL waiting for them to end. I really hope that there is a light at the end of this tunnel and not an on-coming train.

I'm sorry you're suffering as I am but we do have on average one third of our lives left to look forward to and post menopausal stuff like hot flashes do eventually end!

I'm interested to know the timeline for others. Something I read recently stated that many women experience symptoms for 14 years, and recently I seem to be meeting women who verify that.

I'm prone to catastrophic thinking so it would help a lot to know that there IS an end in sight!

I'd say they lasted about 2 years..........from start to finish.

The beginning was the roughest.

I took the Pill constantly for 10 years, starting when I was 40. That meant my cycles and all were turned off, I guess. I quit taking the pill when I was 50, since that is about the age when my mother lost her periods. I havent had any hot flashes or any other symptoms. Dont have them now, have never had them. I guess I have been through menopause??

They lasted a few years. I use the example that it takes several years to go through puberty. So....takes about the same time to reverse the situation.

HRT is not the devil it was painted to be a few years ago....you may want to try small doses of estrogen (and probably progesterone to balance it out). I've also heard gabapentin (prescription) is very good.
