getting back to work is a good thing. After 3 months, I decided to get back to work and it makes time go by faster. So far it has been over 16 weeks for me and I can't put any weight on my leg yet. Have next doc appt. mid- Aug. and no guarantee even then. As time goes on,you figure out how to get more independent! My last xray appt a month ago, I thought for sure doc was going to tell me bones have healed enough to walk --he didn't, I got teary eyed and had to accept that it is what it is -- a long journey. There are a lot of "us" out there -- hang in there!

I started to day too after 8 weeks. I broke my tib/fib and lateral malleolus ( fib at the ankle ). Have a IM nail bit no cast. It may be takinglonger for you since you may have gone the non surgical route. All walking is still with the "boot" as bones have not healed. Not much pain after a full days work

As I progressed I began taking water aerobics, had to modify many of the moves, but it was really good to be able to move around and exercise, I was able to do much more in the water than out. As my ankle got stronger I started using a kickboard and swim fins. I was cautious using the fins at first, they really give your ankle a workout, I started doing just a little with smaller fins and gradually worked up to regular fins and swimming/kicking up to a mile 3 times a week.

You have to really be careful getting in and out of the pool and walking/crutching around the pool deck area. I would get to a chair or bench that was close to the pool and take my boot off, get down on the floor on my butt and scoot in the pool that way. When I was still using the walker, I would just use it to get to the steps going into the pool and leave it there to use when getting out. Also a pair of water shoes helps to keep from slipping. I think I read on here where someone else used rubber bands to put dish cloths on the end of their crutches for more traction around the pool. So plan ahead and you will do just fine, it also helps if you have someone that can go with you if you need a little help.
Goodluck!
Nanny

Thanks very much...Its good 2 get advice from someone who has been there...The docs and therapist dont explain everything and I suppose they dont have the time either...Didnt think a broken ankle wud be this much hassle and rehab needed!!

Start pool therapy next week. 2 PT sessions/week with one in the pool. Should be fun

Now i'm wondering how long it is going to take me to be able to walk once the cast is removed. I also have alot of pain behind my knee which is driving me nuts most of the day. The doctor put me on Noreco as of today whichi is Hydrocodone, but is stronger. Twice the Narcotic and half the tylenol. It seems to be working much better. I am so sorry to all of us who is going thru this hellish pain. I don't remember the first 2 plus weeks in the Hospital due to Trauma and going into shock. It was hell the hallucinations I do remember though, which make me very nervous to have more surgery done since I also have plates and screws up from the bottom of my leg to close to me knee. I knew there would be complications in life after this, but now I'm beginning to think I'm not going to be walking or longer than I though. Please ease my mind.
Did you ask if why they did not rod you through the tibia. I avoided the cast route and am full weight bearing and back to work in 8 wks

I was practicing after a league game and went over the foul line. I hit the oil with my right foot and twisted on my left leg breaking both the tib and fib. When I first went down I thought, ok bad sprain. NOT. My son was with me, so that was a great help (he is the better bowler). The EMT's got me to the hospital where I got the drugs and X-Rays and then "You did it bowling?" started. The next morning I had a rod and 4 screws put in and was able to go home the next day.

I was in bed for two weeks, but I think am lot luckier than most. I was able to get off the pain stuff after about a week and a half.

I went back to the DR thurs and they put a smaller cast on and told me I could do 50% weight bearing. This is great since I do not have to work so hard with the crutches.

MY wife found this forum and I think it is great. Lot's of good info and some of the stories bring a .

From what I read, I have been pretty lucky. After 3 weeks I have no pain, the swelling is way down, I can walk with crutches and need no pain killers. It looks like the PT will start in two weeks, which is good.

I just wanted to say thank you to all who have posted. I has been a great help.

I think I have you on the bowling accident! I was walking down stairs and stepped down on the ground at bottome which was a deeper step and was angled as it was a boat launch ramp and my first step with my weight broke my tib/fib -- I am 5'8" 200 lbs.
I fell off a chair while painting the outside patio door. Comminuted fx of tib/fib and a fx of the ankle. Memorial event on Memorial day. It's 8 wks now and full weight bearing and back to wrk. I had surgery and got a rod with 4 screws. No cast.

Bowling, falling downstairs or falling off a chair ? Same results

May 31st of this year I was riding my motorcycle ( R1 ) in the canyons. I came around a blind left hand turn when another vehicle came into my lane and pushed me into the shoulder. Needless to say, I slowed down as much as possible but I hit the gaurd rail at about 35-40mph, which broke my leg, then I bounced off of the rail, did a flip and landed on my back in the middle of the road. I was wearing full gear and a helmet so overall my injuries weren't as bad as they could have been. However the person that pushed me into the rail did not stop and continued on.

(a nice side note - while i was on the strecher being loaded into the ambulance, a state trooper "CSP" came by and gave me a careless driving ticket! )

I broke my Tib and Fib right above my riding boot on my right leg. I had surgery the next day and had a rod put in my tib with 2 screws @ the ankle and 1 screw below my knee to hold it in place.

I was in the hospital for 3 days, then immediately put in a black/verlcro frankenstein boot and told not to put pressure on it. I had my first post op appointment 8 days after the surgery and was told the usual,,, no pressure, keep it elevated, do leg movement excersises, and so on.

I have been able to move move leg and ankle fairly well, even though my ankle is still swollen. I have even accidentally put some pressure on my foot without any real pain.

I have my 6 week appointment today in about 2 hours and I am hoping that the dr. will let me start putting pressure on it, because I am going crazy not being able to walk and work.

Also, my lovely family oriented employer here in Denver, CO would not give me any light duty work or any support. They didn't even send me a card or call me at the hospital to see how I was doing. I guess working your ass off for 2 years doesn't mean a damn thing to a company that boasts about all of the ethics awards it's recieved.
Exactly one week ahead of you. Fell of a chair and broke tob/fib/ankle. IM rod with screws. Similar boot like yours. Your progress is good. I am back to work today and can walk with a cane. Never used crutches as too unstable. Graduated from walker to cane. Very easy transition.

Best of luck to you and happy healing

The rod actually called a IM nail is through the tibia. The fibula is too thin and not actually weight bearing. The pain will go away soon. Do your therapy. I was non weight bearing for 4 weeks. Don't start walking without the docs advice. If they gave you a Knee high boot wear that when they allow you to walk. I am walking with a cane after 8 wks

Happy healing

So many things to learn from here from everyone's experiences. From this place I realize that everyone heals very differently and everyone has different struggles on their road to recovery. I look to many of the contributors here as inspirations & for comfort. I also have a wonderful close friend who was a hit & run victim years back with horrific injuries, but you would never guess if you met her, to provide encouragement & perspective.I've definitely had many low moments. I am now 6wks post second surgery to correct the original. My injury occurred early April after tumbling down the stairs with my youngest. I have rod, plates, pins & screws, a bionic leg indeed. I have gained almost full ROM in my ankle & knee. I am happy to be at the next stage of partial weight-bearing & starting the strengthening. I have been dreaming about starting the walking stage & have been a little taken aback (but not too discouraged) to feel the "unnaturalness" of trying to walk on the bad leg. I have tried to use this time to my advantage that my normally hectic life prevents: to really watch my children grow, to reconnect with friends, to read, to reflect on this blurred life that I had called mine and to breathe. Don't get me wrong, I still get those bad moments at times but they do not overpower me as they once did.
