Honestly, I think everyone can hear ringing in their ears and I don't think it's caused by injury. It's high frequency sound that's all around us.
No, there's a difference if you actually have tinnitus ear ringing. I just began to have it in my right ear 2 months ago and it can be really annoying at times. I may try the ear bud idea. The tinnitus literally began after sleeping on my right ear for 2 hours one night - never had it before.

I've had tinnitus for 40+ years, it's not caused by injury. I have hearing loss also. I mostly notice it when it's very quiet in my house or when I am reminded I have it (like when reading this thread).
It certainly CAN be caused by injury, thought it isn't for everyone.
Yep. Mine was caused by one full week of shooting hundreds of rounds with an M-14 rifle with zero ear protection and being in very close proximity of many others doing the exact same thing... compliments of Uncle Sam.

I believe mine can ultimately be traced to a single round of 357 magnum fired 15 feet away from my left ear when I had my ear plugs out. It didn't start until years later, but that ear "felt different" ever since that shot and I only have it in that ear. I knew right away it would never be the same. Surprisingly I have very little hearing loss in that ear though
