Just wondering if anyone with pre/adolescent kids have experience with their kids preferring a doctor of their own sex versus opposite sex?
My kids are only 6 & 8, but I figure since I'm changing doctors because we moved out of state, I might as well pick a pediatrician that my kids can "grow" with. I don't want to start seeing one doc and then a few years later having to change again only because of gender.
Does the gender of the doctor make any difference? A friend of mine switched her daughter to a female pediatrician around 13 or so because she just felt more comfortable/less self conscious. Does this happen with boys??? Would a boy tween/teen feel more comfortable with a male doctor??? Or does it not make a difference?
I think I'm also going to go with a family practice doc instead of a pediatrician this time. Don't know if that will make any difference.
I think it depends on the kid. A couple of years ago when my son was 9 or 10 years old, his (female) pediatrician mentioned to me that many boys prefer to switch to a male pediatrician around this age. I have asked my son but so far he hasn't wanted to change.

I agree. Way, way less risks of 'perving' incidents... Besides, a female doc understand a woman's body differently than a man.
Our pediatrician is a man, and I really like him. He's great with both of my kids (an 8 year old boy and a 6 year old girl). As my daughter gets older, she may ask to see one of the women in the practice, which would be fine with me, and I'm sure, fine with our doctor. He has daughters too, so I'm sure he'll understand.
My three sons all see a male family doctor....actually my 8 year old daughter does too...however, I'm changing her over to a female practicing in the same office in the near future. I think my sons would be uncomfortable having a female doctor doing the hernia examinations each year! That's very personal for a young guy.
When I was a kid, I had a male doctor and it never made a difference to me. It's not like he was giving me a gyn. exam. Might be different for boys though.
I've had both female and male doctors my entire life... I always prefered the male doctors because most of the females I came in contact with had a certain arrogance about them that I didn't like. My gyno is currently a man (I had a woman gyno for many years) and he's extremely knowledgeable and I dont' feel uncomfortable at all discussing girl issues with him. I have told him though, that if I were to get pregnant, I would seek out a female midwife and he's more than supportive of that.
