Calcutta--Angry passengers turned the tables on six armed train robbers in eastern India, beating them to death with sticks and umbrellas, police said.
The robbers struck as the train approached a small station, Mayur Halt, about 90 km north of Calcutta, the capital of West Bengal State, said Chayan Mukherjee, the inspector-general of police.
Passengers who were robbed alerted others on the train. as the train came to a halt, the robbers tried to flee but were chased and beaten with sticks, stones and umbrellas, Mukherjee said.
" The robbers were dead when police arrived," he said.
Train robberies are common in eastern India.
The Barber's Pole

On October 19, 1902, Booker T Washington came to the Shiloh Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, to address the National Convention of Negro Baptists. The church was packed with over 3000 people when two men began to fight over an unoccupied seat. Someone shouted "Fight" which the crowd mistook for "Fire" and a stampede ensued. 115 people were crushed to death or suffocated.
