Hi Gang. Happy (nearly) 4th!

I have a layout question. We have two couches of equal length in an L formation. We found a matching sofa table, end table, and coffee table. The coffee table is more rectangular than square. With a couch arrangement like this, would it be odd to have a rectangular coffee table, where one couch is on the receiving end of the longer side of the table, and the other couch is on the receiving end of the shorter side of the table. Make sense? A square coffee table would perhaps might be more porportional to both couches, but it also takes up more space. Thoughts? The coffee table has a glass top to keep the room open.

We were also thinking of having a soft, high pile lighter shade rug to help soften the area too. Rather than conforming the rug size to the area close to the couches, we were thinking of letting the run to the right of the couches (see picture). A rug confined to just in front of the couches I think would be too constricted and a hard to find size. Also, by letting the rug approach the stairs on the opposite side of the room, it joins the two areas.

Any input?

I think it would help to see a full picture of the room.

Also, I wouldn't buy a set of tables that match. It looks very, home catalog/furniture store-like.

I prefer area rugs to be placed slightly under the seating furniture with the front legs of the furniture resting on the area rug. Can't tell if that's part of your plan.

good to know all 3 tables dont have to match. we are leaning on not putting the couch on top of rug. some seem to like that, others dont't.

The rug should be small enough that the couches are not touching it or large enough that they are sitting on the rug completely. Extending it out past the furniture will look like you bought a rug that was too big for the room. I would get a smaller rug for that space. It will be enough to define the space and soften the room. I would also move the one couch away from the other a little so the arms are not touching, center it on the fireplace.

I agree with golfgal about rug size. Either buy a small rug that fits just inside the sofa seating area or buy a room sized rug. That halfway idea just doesn't work.

i agree a couch should either be all on a rug or off... not just front legs on a rug. we'll probably be getting a sitting chair to sit to the right of the couch, so we still need to consider if the rug should extend to that area as drawn

Wait until you buy the additional chair before you decide on rug size.

As your room is at this time, it will look strange to have the rug going halfway past the edge of the sofa.

Bingo!
The halfway on, halfway off thing just looks like one could not afford a larger rug.
