These days there are 2 of us in a 2 bathroom house....our last house had 3 bathrooms for
the 5 of us....When I was a child we had 1 bathroom for the 5 of us. Do you think you have
enough bathrooms for the number of people living in your home?
My husband and I each need separate bathrooms; we value our privacy and need a lot of space for our things. Ideally, I'd like a third bathroom for guests to use.
With that in mind, there should be one bathroom per adult PLUS an additional guest bathroom in every house. Kids could probably share, at least to a certain age.
It's not just the number of people but the mix of people too. Right now there are 3 of us and 2 bathrooms. 2 20-something guys and me, a 50-something gal. I have the private bathroom but would be ok sharing it with a spouse or even 1 of my adult kids.
But yes, I grew up with mom,dad,2 kids with 1 bathroom because that's how all family houses were built it seems. My dad got ingenious at one point and put a toilet in the garage and tied it into the sewer system. A totally DIY project but since we also put an inground pool in the back it was important to have access to a bathroom. It seemed awesome at the time.
We started out in a 1 bath house but traded up when we had 2 kids of our own.
We have more than enough. It's a 4 bedroom house, with 5.5 baths. I grew up in a 5 bedroom house, 1.5 baths, for 9 people. I think people, especially our young, have gotten used to having their own bathrooms, and house hunters look for that option. It isn't necessary.
I would have a master bath for two, and one bath per two kids, a powder room in a 2 story house, and a separate bath with each guest room.
Right now, we have a split plan with two bedrooms and a bath at one end of the house for guests. It works out well, but it would prevent us from having two sets of unrelated friends at the same time, because who wants to share a bathroom with strangers? Not me.
ONE main bathroom for up to FOUR. In the hallway: Mom. Dad. And two kids.
Yeah... it really is enough.
I recently remodeled my small rancher (>1200sf).
It used to be a 3 small BR's with NO closet space, ONE full bath and one half bath with the "master".
After about 10 redesign schemes I settled on making it into a TWO bedroom house.
And doing that by increasing the bathroom area and the closet space a LOT. No "powder room".
I think it'll work but if a family ever buys it they'll need to have same gendered kids.

I'm also re-making the lower level ("daylight basement") into a nice space.
Another full bathroom. Another bedroom; both large and with closet space.
And a lot of flexible space generally.
With cats, the litterbox rule is take the number of adults, +1

With cats, you take the number of adults in the household and add one more litterbox. If expense is no object, I think the same rule works, the extra can even be a half bath.
Our current house has 2 full and 2 half bathrooms. The basic model came with 2 1/2 baths but we finished the basement and put a half-bath in there that has roughed-in plumbing should we want to add a shower (we don't want to but a future owner may).
We're planning to downsize. When we do, I want (it's just the 2 of us these days) at least 1 1/2 baths in the new place.
