Well, I have decided that a large square dining table would be perfect for my dining room. The room is square, and I have decided not to go with a round table which was my first idea. A 72" X 72" (6' square) is what I want, and had no idea it would be so difficult to find.
I would use 8 chairs with it, but could seat 12 with other chairs from around the house if the need arose. Why is this so hard to find? I want all wood - preferably a darker finish - but would be willing to refinish it myself.
My husband could build it. I like simple lines, but he just doesn't have a lot of time or space to work on it now. I have thought about asking on craigslist to see if someone local could make it, but I just don't know.
Anybody have any pointers or ideas where to look?
Thanks in advance!

It's this little economic thing called "supply&demand".

Perhaps these are not so common simply because the diners would need extremely long arms to reach anything that ended up toward the center of the table.

Also, the size of the room. You need another 4 feet or so around each side for folks to sit at and move around the table when others are seated, so the room needs to be a minimum of 14' square. You can always stick one of those Chinese restaurant Lazy Susans in the center.

I would also suggest that, if you are in your forever home and you know that, and this is what you want, well ok. BUT, you have to have a certain size room to handle a table of that size and you may be forced to leave it behind if you ever have to move.

I understand that you want it. In fact, I was willed a gorgeous grandfather clock, that I dearly loved. I was quite fortunate however, when it was moved accidently to another benefactors home. I no longer had a clock I loved but, I no longer needed to buy my house around that clock.

The "other" economic part- expensive as Hell to build! So they ask 3prices for them!!!

I can think of much better ways to spend $5k!

6' square is huge! Given that most tables really aren't even 3 feet across, being 6 feet away from your dinner companions would make for difficult conversations. Take some paper and put it on the floor in that room to match your desired dimensions and see if the is really what you want.

You will probably have to get a custom build because most people won't want a table that large.

I have an antique oak dining table which belonged to my great great grandmother c. 1867. It's 56 inches wide.

Too wide!!!!!!!!! for dining.

I can't imagine 72 inches!
