We have a high end futon/ couch in our tv/guest room and it is very comfy to sit on and I have slept on it several times and it is extremely comfortable. The futon has a 10 inch mattress and a nice curved wood arm, looks very attractive.
Cheap futons with cheap mattresses are awful!
What I love about the futons are the removable covers, easy to change the look and easy to clean.

Oh and I recently slept on a "sleeper sofa" and it was not nearly as comfortable as a good quality futon.

I've never seen a comfortable futons. I spent most of my time adjusting the ever sliding mattress. How often do you have guests? We just bought inflatable mattresses for the rare occasions we have guests.

Instead of a futon, try a bed trundle bed/day bed. If you want to use the room for things besides a guest room, get a murphy bed or a good air mattress for your guests.

Totally agree. We have both, and the futon is 100X more comfortable to sleep on.

We had a futon with nice thick mattress and we left it open all the time because it was too uncomfortable to sit on. (We pushed it up against the wall and lounged on it for TV watching. And, it was great to sleep on.) I got rid of it as soon as I could. Get a sleeper sofa as you'll sit more than you'll have guests.

Our son has a futon and has slept on it for 7 years. He loves it. He has a large bedroom with an office alcove and the rest of the room set up with large screen TV and audio equipment. He wanted the futon because it worked as a sofa during the day. I was very hesitant at first, but gave in and it was a good choice. A high quality futon will cost you as much as a good sofa but in our case it has been worth every penny.

I have one in my den/guest room and I love it. The frame is solid wood. I splurged for the better mattress, and it's incredibly comfortable.

Beats a sleeper sofa any day for comfort (no bar in your back), and is much easier to shove around when vacuuming.
