Hi everyone,

As a first time home owner, I got too many questions, but let me start with this one:
I need to put a Dish Network dish on my roof, but my house is back with tons of trees. The Dish Network guy couldn't find a spot on roof with a clear shot of sky.
Options:
1. Cutting down 5ft of tree tops: can't do! Not all the trees have my name on it.
2. This guy told me that I can hire local TV guy to put a 6ft tall tripod on the roof so they can install their dish on it. Is this a good idea? Has anybody done this before? Pros & Cons?

I am afriad that:
* Big tripod topped with a dish will lose the battle with big wind or storm.
* It might create leak points and mess up my roof.

I know, I know I am a loser when I have to have some programs only offered by Dish Network...
Any opinions would be great help!
Thanks!

I know what you mean, I went with Dish for the same reason (they had 3 channels not offered by my local cable company and one was the one I watch constantly)!

Anyway, to the point: a 6-ft tripod may or may not be stable enough, depending on what kind of winds you get. Do you have a chimney extending up from your roof? If so how high? It might be better to attach the dish to one side of the chimney.

I have my dish plus a roof antenna because I'm close enough to pull in "air" broadcast signals from the NY City channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, etc) and thus get all their high-definition programming for free. I ran into a tree problem because of where the antenna had to be aimed (more horizontal than the dish) and my tv guy was able to attach the antenna to my roof chimney using steel bands. Trust me, that antenna's not going anywhere and I'm in a high-wind area right next to the water too.

If you do have a chimney it might be the right height because around here anyway, Code says that the tops of chimneys have to be at least 6 ft taller than the highest point of the roof. So yours might be the same.

Attaching the dish to the chimney won't compromise your roof surface either.

Thanks for your reply 4StanleyCups!

The bad news is my roof chimney is really short, and it's sitting on lower portion of the roof. I guess MN doesn't have the same code for chimney.
My house is right next to a big lake, but backed into heavy woods. We could have high winds at times in winter, but I just moved into my new home about 2 weeks ago, I have no idea how windy it could get....
My coworker told me that I can put in a retractable post in my backyard, and just extend the thing all the way out of tree line WITH a dish on it. Good idea? I guess my new neighbor will kill me if a big metal post will fall on his roof...
Man, I knew I should just get that house sitting right on the lake shore in my neighborhood, It's just 2.5 million more..... who cares.....

Any other thought please?

I never liked the idea of an antenna on the roof. I have always sunk a pipe in the ground and top part fastened to the roof overhang....
